Because the Saudis and Russians DO read.

Noting the former president's proclivity towards boredom, general lack of interest in reading and abject love of TV, the editorial board writes:

still.  He had two farking years to scan, encrypt, and destroy this shiat, and even if he was too stupid to do that, surely the Saudis or Russians have people smart enough to tell Eric how.

I guess we might find out why. . .or not, but I do wonder if our nation's enemies *wanted* him to get caught with this shiat to make us all look farking stupid.  Because we look pretty farking stupid.

I've been asking this question all along.  I'd like to know how this all came about.  How were these particular documents chosen to be taken?  Were there others taken that were not classified? Did someone other than Trump select the documents and if so, who? Have these documents just been sitting around for the past 19 months or have they already been copied? I believe we will never get to the bottom of this.

If I had to guess, though, I'd say it was for more crimes.

I was wondering the same thing and there are only 2 reasons he would.

To sell them/trade for favors.

And to feel big and important.

Same thing goes for the people that have libraries of books behind them in their photos or videos/impress people.

"Look at me, I'm a bigly important person.  I'm so important I have these state secret documents."

Why not just wave his hands over them and declare them Executive Select Gold Top Secret?

Only Excecutive Select Gold Club members have clearance to view these top-quality, fantastic documents. Just the best. Executive Select Gold Club memberships are available, pricing on request in $USD/RMB/SR/RUB or currency of choice. Combination of both.

The model of AF-1 with new paint scheme? The letter from Kim Jong-un? Yeah. Stolen keepsakes.

The file on Macron? The names and salaries of FBI agents and informants? The nuclear documents? Oh yeah. That was ALL for sale.

My working hypothesis is that it's actually Jared the doll-faced boy's operation, and that TFG was just along for the ride. I have a hard time believing that the former president, whose concept of object permanence is questionable, is capable of the advance planning necessary to sneak top secret documents out of the White House.

It wasn't him alone.

Zero percent probability he identified the TS/SCI information to steal. Zero percent that he actually stole it.

Those who actually stole the documents are screwed one by one as the FBI lifts their prints page by page. Someone will say it was either traitor Trump or traitor Kushner who told them to.

What a dumbass question! He just didn't want anyone to know that the nuclear code to destroy the earth was "password". Or maybe it was 012345. Anyway the important thing is that the Orange Menace was gonna blow up the planet right before the raid. I can't wait until he moves to Russia!

I've wondered how it is these documents went missing without anyone knowing. My theories are:

1) Nobody was expecting them to be stolen by the president, so no one was watching.
2) By the end of his term, there was just wall-to-wall incompetence at every level.

I doubt they had to do any sneaking at all.

It seems like they didn't start checking until the files made it to the National Archives. But even then, how could they tell what was missing or if anything was missing? My tin foil theory is Trump stole pages but didn't think it through. So NARA was like "Why are pages 4-7 missing from this list of CIA assets?"

Just based on the fact that only a handful of Two Scoops' cronies were even allowed in the room for the Top Secret stuff, I'm betting Kush ran point, bribed the supervisor, and took the TS/SCI documents.

That stuff can't be delegated. One of the top people had to get their hands dirty.

Um.  Copy, return the originals.  One of the smarter evil monkeys could have taught him to press the camera button on his phone, except Trump would have lost interest the moment you switched his phone from Twitter to the camera app.  Actually, he would have lost interest maybe two to three words after you'd finished the part where he could sell the photos.

Getting him to arrange those boxes to go to MaL was probably a herculean task.

The Trump administration was also an unending open spigot of information leaks in ways that weren't clearly intentional treason.  The people responsible for watching for this kind of shiat spent the whole administration running from fire to farking fire, constantly dealing with Trump just literally telling Russian and Saudi diplomats state secrets completely unprompted, his entire farking staff using random farking unsecured cell phones instead of the legally-required government-issued ones, physically ripping up documents when he was bored, etc.

People were watching, because these things leaked to the media all the time (through yet more data breaches).  It's likely that there was just such a high volume of information being lost/unsecured that the stuff they intentionally stole for treason purposes slipped through the cracks of a control system designed around the idea that a presidential administration would at least make a minimal effort not to get US soldiers and other federal employees killed (something else Trump did at least four times that leaked to the public, once by farking Tweet).

He showed for 4 years that he was completely ignorant of most elements regarding how the White House or government works. Probably never dawned on him that records were kept of every single time someone went into the SCIF room to even look at a Top Secret document.
