That is seriously cool, and I want one.

But I wanted it painted with that big, chunky 70's metal-flake paint like they use on bass boats, with turbine mags and white letter tires.

Back in the 80's, a neighbor across the street would take us on rides when the weather was nice and pull us on a sled behind him (slowly) when we had snow.

Yep, that's an easy sell for me.

The 300 mi range is plenty, given that any ~200mi highway drive looks like it'd be an exercise in discomfort,

Love the look & simplicity of it though. Fun fair-weather runabout.

I want this, but don't believe the hype about 300 mile range. I bet that's rated at 55 mph on a level street.

All that accelerating and rolling in the sand, up and down dunes will reduce the range
significantly.

Still want, but I'm expecting it to be like my Arrma rc car, an hour or so of fun and then a few hours of recharge.

I always wanted slot mags for mine, but then I found some original M/T Torque Thrusts.  But I'm still on the lookout for a nice set of slots mags.  I can always use them on the Manx 2.0

Exactly. It's all specs on paper until they actually build them and people drive them around. I'd bet if actually used in sand they'd be lucky to get half that range.

Ah, Wonderbug. He and Speed Buggy were part of my Saturday mornings in the mid-70's.

Would be cool except its an EV. (Note: Where are you going to find a recharging station out in the dunes?)

Hnnnnnng.

I had to sort the drivability and electricals on one of those.  I have no idea what it had for a drivetrain other than that it was a dual port engine with a Weber progressive carb that was jetted horribly rich.  And that whoever built it did not derate the front torsion bars, so it sat topped out at rest.  Front was so light that you could lift it by hand, or as I discovered by accident, releasing the clutch too quickly in first gear.

Well, no thanks but thumbs up.

A recent Jalopnik-hosted sentiment is that the world needs more weird cars. Yes, please. I am generally in favor of that. If battery-ization of cars is going to make them less expensive, and if everything is going to be a skateboard with a body strapped onto it, and if we are going to get smaller, lightweight (?), low-speed vehicles for urban travel, then let's make them funky. Let's enjoy a renaissance and have a festival of romanticism! Individuality! I am all for it.

And if all EVs are going to be heavy hulks with high price tags designed to win drag races, then we are heading in the wrong direction. Exactly the wrong direction. It is like Apple, promising in 1984 to free us from being tied to mainframes, only to make everyone a slave to mainframes.

Two motors and rear wheel drive*?  Make zero sense, unless they plan on a 4WD version in the near future.

*Yes, I understand this eliminates the differential and provides better traction control.

I can make a topical statement! So two weeks ago? A week ago. This really happened.

I had some kids together and it was not raining, and not sunny, but cloudy. Hey! Let's go fishing. Pier fishing. Barbecue on the pier. Yay! Hop in the car kids. We will pick up some bait along the way!

Uh oh. The battery in my plug in was down to about 10%. It has been cloudy, so I had forgotten to recharge it. What to do? What to do?

Well, no problem, obviously. I had about 80 to 120 miles of driving ahead of me, and I had plenty of gas enough for that, and all the gas stations along the way to meet any need. Why not? I felt... sad somehow... for about five seconds and then got on with my life.

A plug in hybrid with a discharged battery becomes... a hybrid... hauling around a dead battery. I still got great mileage. I ended the trip with 50 ish mpg. A lot of slow speeds and flat driving. Did not use the AC. This might be the first time I have ever just shrugged and started a long trip with an empty battery.

It was fun. We caught a lot of FUGU for some reason, and threw them back, obviously. Got a great flounder, and some others. It was a good day. Kids played with their cousins and checked out tide pools.

If I lived in a warm-year-round place I'd want one, fark yeah. I'd be the most obnoxious motherfarker about it too. Silent electric car, blaring Fu-Manchu everywhere.

For the low low price of $XX,XXX a month we'll dispatch a helicopter with a fully charge battery to you as long as you're in the U.S..

i'll never have one because it will cost more than a Porsche and the battery will be exclusive to this vehicle only and expensive as hell to replace. dammit.

People talk about how great cartoons were before "30 minute toy commercials" but they are shockingly wrong, and I have the Hanna Barbera and Ruby Spears video evidence to prove it.

On topic, for some reason I thought dune buggies had been outlawed, having not seen one since their 70s heyday. And presumably laws protecting ocean dunes.

I used to see them a lot in the 80s in central Oklahoma, even though the nearest dunes were probably over 2 hours away, in Little Sahara State Park.  There were a lot of other VW-based kit cars around too.  I think they just fell out of favor, but I loved those buggies.

Come to think of it, you can't even play Slug Bug anymore.  You could hardly spit without hitting a classic Bug.  I'm starting to think the guy that ran the Gold Car on Street Outlaws bought them all, because there's always like 15 Bugs parked outside his shop every time I drive by.
