"Just because I'm Rushdie, doesn't mean I'm in a rush to die!"

Let's hopes Salman spawns a movement against censorship.

He's 75 years old already, so good for him.

/And every day I think, But Jimmy Carter is still alive, so anything is possible.

That's a relief. It would've been awful if the zealous shiatbags won in the end.

And the shiatbag who did this has pleaded not guilty, after stabbing Rushdie multiple times in front of a room full of witnesses. He's toast.

I'll say it again: read the damn book! It's brilliant.

Excellent. His writing is what got me into magical realism as my favorite genre of fiction when I was 11. Led to a voracious appetite for authors like Bulgakov, Italo Calvino, and Jeanette Winterson. Like everyone else who wish him harm, and those who seek to ban books in general, I'm certain his attacker never read the works that so offend him.

News about the stabbing has led to renewed interest in "The Satanic Verses," which topped best seller lists after the fatwa was issued in 1989. As of Saturday afternoon, the novel ranked No. 13 on Amazon.com.

So not only did he fail to successfully carry out the fatwah, he has brought awareness of the book to a new generation of readers.

I spent my teen years in that region. Just south in Jamestown but been to Mayville multiple times, mostly by bike. Western NY is white trash territory.

Nothing more to add. Sorry I know you are used to me providing intellectual commentary 🤭😜

Looks like the celebrations in Iran were premature. Also there was a huge spike in the book's sales which is a great 'fark you' to whoever was celebrating.

I read it. I don't get the fatwa.

Then again, I don't get fatwas against cartoonists either. I was raised Roman Catholic and we told more insulting jokes about members of the clergy and members of the Trinity. Pretty sure members of the clergy partake in that kind of joke-telling as well.

Are you saying no one has ever read "The Satanic Verses" and been inspired to similar fiction?

I read it at the time of all the outcry.
Had to wait months before the Library could get me a copy and they said I could only have it for a fortnight.
I speed read it and lent it to a workmate who wanted to take a look.

I wasn't overly impressed with his writing style to be honest.
Is that because I didn't read the Quran as well?

Do I have to read the Bible to understand all Western fiction?
If so then I have some catching up to do!

Nope. I'm just calling BS that an 11 year old read it. The pretentiousness just rubbed me the wrong way.
He was probably 11 in the mid-90s and too busy playing Nintendo to worry about Salman Rushdie.
Not saying he didn't read it later in life, but at 11?  Nope.

His book probably would have came and went in the 80s without a lot of fanfare but Iran gave him millions in free advertising. And with the stabbing he got more advertising way to go Iran you Streisand effected yourself.

Ahh  -Sorry.
I missed the 11 years old bit.

That said - I read The Lord of the Rings for the first time at 13 years old.
Took me a few weeks.
Then again we didn't have Nintendo to distract us back in the 70's ;)

Got bad news, bub, there's plenty of us that read stuff as kids that was (supposedly) way too old for us. For some reason our children's library had a copy of Jean Renvoize's A Wild Thing, and I, a copious reader at age 10, was permitted to check it out. It was in the kid's wing, after all.
I read plenty of other adult books between ages 8 and 13 because they were scattered around the house, my much older brothers leaving them about. Vonnegut, in particular, I loved. I would've loved Rushdie then, too, but 1972 was a hair early for him.

Got bad news for you, bub. I don't believe for a second he was reading The Satanic Verses at his age. People lie on the internet all the time. The name-dropping of authors could easily be pulled from Wikipedia. He even describes himself as a "pretentious name-dropping dilettante".  He's full of sh*t. Pay attention to his posts in the future. He's an American that uses British slang.  Again.  Pretentious.
As far as your choices in literature.....Congratulations. I read The Onion Field and The Choirboys by Joseph Wambaugh as a 13 year old. I loved crime novels. Probably too young, but whatever.
