Anytime I hear the GOP whining about coal miners I mentally replace it with Arby's cashiers. I've not worked for Arby's, but have another fast food company, and about half of us took and packed orders. Puts into perspective how absurd the level of attention they get is.

As part of his climate deal, Manchin also secured an agreement from Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) that Democrats will pass legislation to expedite approval of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which spans hundreds of miles in West Virginia and Virginia.

Coal complains, but the environment is once again the big loser. Just trading one doom for another.

Arby's cashiers are spread out over the entire United States.

Coal miners live and vote in West Virginia, the eastern part of Pennsylvania, and sections of Kentucky.

The level of attention they get from their senators and representatives is not at all absurd given that they represent the bulk of their constituents.

The coal industry, on the other hand, attacked Manchin for making the tax permanent and pushing policies to subsidize alternative energy sources. Leaders of Appalachian coal groups, including the West Virginia Coal Association, wrote in a recent letter that the excise tax will cost them tens of millions of dollars...

OH POOR YOU!
[value of coal exports from West Virginia in 2020 was $1.4 billion]

Yes, it's the taxes hurting their ability to compete. Not desperately relying on government handouts to prop up a long-dead industry that just hasn't realized it's been flat-lining for thirty years now.

It's one of those misleading statistics like how much water almonds use so we should stop growing almonds and that would solve the water crisis.

There's about 80,000 to 100,000 people directly involved in coal mining. That's about the same number as are involved in running bowling alleys or in the ski industry nationwide. The misleading part is when you say "nationwide." It's not like there's 5000 coal miners in California, and another 1000 in New York, and say, 800 in Texas. They're all in one place, and nearly all in three states.  So they make a disproportionate amount of noise when anyone talks about changing anything about coal mining.

If all 80,000 bowling alley owners and workers lived and worked in one corner of New Hampshire, and their revenues were a big part of New Hampshire politicians' war chests, we'd be hearing all the time about the plight of bowling alley workers and the need for pin-setters protections or something.

That's all.

I worked in WV state government for a buncha years. Some of these little communities would die without help. And that dickhead could not care less.

We get the butt of jokes, and I get it. I'm a CNY expat, and, let me tell you, the redneckia may be higher up there, in places.

But the kids I've raised down here are progressives. And they have friends. Hope it catches.

I'm no seamless, witty, anything.

Just a tired old man that is off to go help a couple of folk that got flooded out and that need help. I don't even know them, and they are probably Trumpists. I'll do it because my best friend speaks for them and I don't want him to get hurt by trying to do it by himself.

I've made a rep for being a yankee agnostic that always shows up to help folk rebuild. And there is a need for tgat here.

I'm starting to think quite a lot of the nonsense I post on here doesn't completely land.  sometimes I've parsed specific post wrongly, but usually it's because I often read quite a lot into an exchange or dynamic and automatically assume that's what everyone else is thinking too.
and then they're like... wat?

also... (card carrying bad actors excepted) I'm never being mean- I never intend what I say to upset to annoy.  and it never occurs to me that people might not assume that, and sometimes they don't.

and I'm never upset or annoyed by anything said to me in the same spirit.  and I default assume everything is said to me in that spirit... unless it obviously wasn't.  and I assume everybody knows that, but of course how could they, and it'd be a risk to assume unless you're sure... and then they fear they've Done Wrong.

but.  I live, I learn.  people are pretty fascinating
