Apart from learning to engineer better replacement parts for us, what is the point of humanoid robots, when other sizes, shapes, and types of motion are so much better?

Someday people are going to loook back on that video as a sad commentary on how stupid we all were to build the agents of our own deaths.

You know what they got wrong with that robot?  The hip diameter; those legs are too far apart.

The closer they are, the more stable the robot will be.  The further apart, the more side-to-side motion comes with the gait.  If it needs some lateral force it can angle a leg outward.

It also looks like they're exceeding worried about keeping the CoG as close to over the foot in contact with the ground as possible, and that's a bit surprising once you realize they're already balancing that robot outside that area because there's no way not to with a walking gait.  By extending the stride length they would actually gain some stability from forward momentum.

The general idea isn't to keep the CoG in a calculated sphere over the feet (unless you want a robot that stands really well), it's to keep it on a vector without deviations so large you can't correct with the next step.

It's easy to picture a ragtag group of apocalypse survivors watching it on a grainy screen in an underground bunker 30 or 40 years from now.

Walking is basically a brief controlled fall. We're mostly using our muscles to resist gravity. That's why they atrophy in space.
