You're not getting the resources you need so your answer is to cut off all access to resources?

That seems like a great idea.

Go Galt!

What's the upside? No state tax. Sitting in the dark without AC.

2022-08-13 8:50:26 AM
What resources aren't they getting that they claim to need so badly? I bet the county is upset that they have to follow environmental regulations in the harsh desert environment, and think that's just wrong.

FTA  "The region is entitled to more resources to accommodate its growing population, Acquanetta Warren, the mayor of Fontana, told the board of supervisors this week."

Let's assume that's true. Your solution is to receive zero resources?

Secession followed by a tax cut probably.

2022-08-13 10:18:32 AM
Perhaps someone should do the math for them and show that they're actually getting MORE than they're paying for. They're a red county, so I guarantee they're on the wrong side of 0.

2022-08-13 10:18:36 AM
Ah, the "we pay too much and aren't getting anything back" canard. That always seems to stem from entitled white suburb regions who like living close to a city but not close enough to deal with the "ethnic" parts.

2022-08-13 10:20:28 AM
Ah, entitlement mentality on full display

Good luck getting resources from Arizona or New Mexico, or even becoming your own state.  How's the water situation out there, by the way?

"Secession" movements are always over-covered in the media and on Fark, when all they consist of is the same dissatisfied gripers griping their dissatisfied gripes.
That's my gripe.

"state's beloved Joshua trees"

Yeah, hate to tell you but the Jew originally known as Joshua never saw a "Joshua tree" before he was crucified.

Alongside his malign foreign influence efforts with U.S. Political Group 1, Ionov also exercised direction and control over U.S. Political Group 3, an organization based in California whose primary goal was to promote California's secession from the United States. In January and February of 2018, Ionov supported U.S. Political Group 3's efforts - led by the organization's founder (UIC-6)-to orchestrate a protest demonstration at the California Capitol building in Sacramento. Ionov partially funded the efforts and attempted to direct UIC-6 to physically enter the governor's office. Later, Ionov sent various media reports covering the demonstration and U.S. Political Group 3's broader efforts to FSB Officer 1, writing that FSB Officer 1 had asked for "turmoil" and stating, "there you go."

/ surely just a coincidence

Please show me in the Constitution what your county is entitled to. I'm sure all the Supreme Court originalists will back you up. Maybe you should elect better politicians if you want more political power.

"I don't care if people think we can secede or not. That was never the point of this," Jeff Burum, the local real estate developer who proposed the idea to officials earlier this summer,

So you're just there to waste time and resources, fark off dude

Have they considered raising taxes so they can afford to be a civilization? Or are they freedom loving clay of the earth who regularly vote down taxes cause the gubmint is evil?

I'm being snarky but I honestly don't know the answer. I assume they do pay a lot because they are in California and it's expensive AF.

FTA:

"People pay high taxes and they do not believe their taxes are coming back to their neighborhoods to address the issues they care about," Supervisor Janice Rutherford said in a meeting earlier this month. "And there is nothing crazy about being angry about those things."

First off, Supervisor Rutherford, define "high".

Second, this sounds eerily familiar to another secessionist movement half the world away.  From the Catalan independence movement Wiki page.

Accounting measures vary, but the BBC and The Washington Post cite estimates that in 2014 Catalans may have paid about 10 billion Euros (or about US$12 billion) more in taxes to the State than what it received in exchange.

So its the same argument that libertarians have made since the beginning, why should I have to pay for other people's stuff, with absolutely zero self-awareness of just how interdependent the United States, and the rest of the world, has become since the 1960s.

Oh, and its unconstitutional too, as referenced in the article.

Blame red states reliance on blue state money.

We're gonna need to make an example of someone or the fascists are gonna keep doing this.  An entire state would be way too much effort but a single county? That sounds way more doable.  Let them secede.  Put up a fence around the county with US Customs checkpoints at every exit.  Cut off water and power that isn't generated in the county immediately.  Cut off any and all trade until they get international trade agreements worked out.  Give them their Galtian utopia.  And fly drones around videoing everything.  Then put it on YouTube and let the other fascists watch them tear eachother to pieces fighting over who gets to eat the last cockroach.

These people cry foul about the imaginary boot on their necks and everyone listens for some reason.  Maybe they need to experience the real boot on their necks.  Just to give them a little perspective.

Both the county sheriff and the district attorney have voiced support for the measure, and told the supervisors at a meeting this week that the state isn't pulling its weight and has failed its responsibility to invest in the prisons, state hospitals and courthouses they say are necessary to keep up with one of America's fastest-growing metro areas.

Yes by all means become your own state. Should work out well. You could call it Jailandia. Or prisonerodino. Fascinaziland.

Because with a growing population and family oriented community what you need is more jails and courtrooms, first and foremost.

What a great plan for a desert region during yet another drought -- which will only get worse as climate change rages on.

Having family in San Bernardino County and in Riverside, I'm not surprised by this since that's been their complaint for years. Mountains aside, there really isn't much in San Bernardino and I say this as someone who grew up in El Monte.

I'm not there yet but I'm close.
Problem is even in a county as dumb as this one there are a lot of good folks stuck there. This isn't a bad faith "good people on both sides" argument, it's just the truth.

Also what do you do about their kids? If all the crazies want to take over a bird sanctuary and beg for snacks I'm all about a siege. Things get different when you include random folks.

If California is anything like NY with respect to taxes, their precious little 2 million people are basically on welfare when it comes to where tax dollars are spent and where they come from.

Also, without knowing much about it, these guys seem super nice and this has nothing to do with the homeless, immigrants, gays, and attractive and successful African-Americans.

SB county is packed with warehouses and distribution facilities, by virtue of it being the cheapest source of large chunks of cheap land near the ports of LA and Long Beach. It's a huge source of jobs and income for the county, as well as a huge source of pollution for the region. The companies who own these warehouses pay next to nothing in taxes and are basically subsidized by the SB county taxpayers.

So as a resident of neighboring LA county, IDGAF

Gee, maybe if more people accurately answered the Census questions they'd get more allocations.

But noooooooo, the Census folks are evil tools of the deep state.

/and if they were smart they'd have done a Get Out the Count effort in their communities with dodgy immigration status, because they count just as much for the census.
