As it's a requirement for workers, why isn't it free.

It is free to submit your taxes, but if you need assistance filling them out you generally have to pay someone.

Considering all the bullets they've bought, and the new physical requirements of IRS employees, I'd suggest clicking the box to donate $2 to the DNC when you file.

Typical American system. IRS agrees to not have their own free system in exchange for companies not charging for people making under 73K. Companies then turn around and trick consumers into thinking they have to pay. Company wins and people lose.

Meanwhile at Turbo Tax headquarters it's all hands on deck. Lawyers, Lobbyists, and Liars unite!!

/Expect lying and misleading ads and thoroughly bribed Congress Critters to mount a full frontal assault on this. Too much money to be made in taking a ride on the backs of the poor.

I'm continually surprised more people don't know about existing free file options- I've been using them painlessly for several years, and consistently mention to coworkers, "Yo, dat shiat free, dawg" and endlessly get bUt My AcCoUnTaNt, shake my head, and go about my day. The only people at my work who wouldn't quality would be managers and maybe a joint file with their spuse (I don't know the income limit to free file a joint return. Not like I get a tax deduction for my long term monogamous relationship with my right hand).

My wife's a CPA and tax auditor.  Our taxes are actually rather simple, as her job is W-2, I'm on Social Security, all of our investments are in IRAs and I'm not old enough to be forced to withdraw anything.  Our housing costs are such that we don't even itemize.

gnosis301: MaliFinn: Forget income taxes and just go to a national sales tax.

Because it solves two problems:

1.  We do not provide people with enough education to comprehend the tax systems they are subject to, and;
2.  Taxing the money spent allows us to collect taxes on illegal income

Lol, no.
Sales taxes hurt the poorest the most.
Go with a value added tax and a total wealth tax.
Or a tier based flat tax on assets and income with zero deductions of any kind for anyone.

'"Most Americans don't want the tax collector to also serve as the tax preparer," said Derrick L. Plummer, a spokesman for Intuit.'

When I pay sales tax, it's at the store where I buy the product, making it both tax preparer and tax collector.

The only reason Intuit is opposed to easy, free tax filing provided by the IRS is that it cuts into their bottom line and empowers vulnerable people.

I'm not quite sure why.  The rich don't get rich by subjecting themselves to purchases that would incur a sales tax.

Tax bank accounts, hedge fund accounts, stocks accounts, dunning-krugerrand accounts/wallets, etc etc etc etc.  Anything with more than $10,000 in cash or equivalent value gets taxed on everything over that $10,000.  Billionaires can either have thousands of tiny accounts to avoid taxes, or they can pay taxes.

Bank accounts over $10K?  How about no?  Savings accounts for emergency living expense accounts should be above that amount, and shouldn't be taxed at all.

You're thinking in terms of capitalism.  Under Farxism the government provides basic living expenses and saving is discouraged to limit the influence of wealth.

I plan to use that next year, esp. because the additional charges for state filings ~$17 each) are way cheaper than what I paid this year.

Also looks like FreeTax includes 1099 income, home ownership, and other things on the fed return that H&R Block charges for -- can someone confirm this? Thanks in advance.

K, sure.  A sales tax grabs taxes on drug money, wall street microtransactions, everything.  It more than eliminates the need for income taxes, it builds social programs that pull people out of poverty and turns the stock market into an investment vehicle instead of a gambling house.

But whatever, I'm fine either way.  Go ahead and parrot 80s economic arguments it'll make you feel good on the interwebs

I've been using them since they were My1040EZ.

Tho, during my days doing Lyft and Instacart and such, I did avail myself of the free access to TurboTax SE. But now that I'm back to just W2 working, I'm back to using FreeTax.

I hire a CPA because my investment income requires the "premium" version of TurboTax and it takes me hours to complete; for a few hundred more I just pay someone to do it all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm glad they're planning to move forward on this. I don't use the current free file systems because I don't want to give some private company all of my information, so I file a paper return that I prepare myself.

It does frustrate me that I can't even upload their own, fillable PDF instead of printing and mailing.

He's right, you know.

And he and his crime syndicate don't mess around - all of the dealers get a 1099 from their supplier.

The tax code is complex because the world is a complex place, and taxes, deductions, and credits are a powerful tool for helping people get out of poverty. It's one of the main ways we take from the rich and give to the poor, which is why the GOP wants to "simplify" the tax code, as you suggest.

Once upon a time, the IRS did have a staffed help line to assist people with filing - I used it and they were quite helpful. But the GOP gutted funding for it. This restores some of it. They should have provided funding to nonprofits that provide free tax preparation services.
