By repealing the laws which allowed the rise of AM hate radio and faux news, and requiring that news be provided as a service instead of a loss leader for ads.

By requiring that critical thinking be a mandatory course for all high school graduates.

So we're doomed, in other words.

By making the term 'news' in broadcast and print a protected title.
In other words you can't call what you say 'news' unless you follow some basic guidelines about factual content.

Television and divisive politics and the lowest common denominator. You just can't jump-start logic and reasoning in a crowd situation.

Smart people should treat themselves like rare objects and keep their pearls and selves out of the greasy mitts of dullards who take up arms because a REALITY SHOW STAR TOLD THEM SOME MADE UP B.S..

The cult of ignorance is perpetuated by a loose coalescence of money and power that gets to keep money and power by keeping as many people as they can too ignorant to think for themselves.

American history is rife with deliberate capitalist farkery that's directly opposed to what's best for America's people, but good for wealthy sociopaths' balance sheets.

A democracy can only thrive with an educated, informed, and involved populace. That keeps the government acting as a counterbalance to capitalist farkery.

When we don't have educated, informed, and involved citizens it allows the wealth hoarders to negate the government's ability to control them.

That's why they've been actively trying to ruin education for at least 50 years. That's why they bought up the media, so they get to control what most people learn about what's going on. That's why they've made it so difficult to survive in this civilization that most folks are too busy just trying to get by to even think about any of this, much less act on it.

The worst part is there's no Illuminati, no cell  of secret rulers we can assail. It's just a constantly rotating cast of very very mentally ill wealth hoarders acting to protect their addiction.

The American media is largely atrocious. Even without Fox News, which is straight-up brainwashing propaganda, the rest very clearly and dutifully fails to inform, address real issues, or remember basic facts in order to explain full narratives.

Actually, I think PTSD is a little generous. Unless you count the loss of symbols as trauma (it may well be) . Compare the response to Katrina, Covid, any of the wars that were supposedly in retaliation to 9/11, or any number of calamities caused by our healthcare system.

It is clear to me that the loss of 3k lives was inconsequential to the m average American. What was mourned was the loss of big talk buildings and a feeling of invincibility. It's incredibly sad that we were so fragile that it's what broke the country.

Because of this, I ascribe our response to 9/11 as spiteful malice (a standard to which we've continued to live up to since) rather than grief.

When money and land are more important than the interest of the majority then we get tyranny by the minority.

Which has never actually worked long-term but it takes a costly intervention to overcome. If we are not willing to intercede, then others will be forced to.

Not only can you find the original reporting easily, but it also makes the echo chambers easy to see.  (The right wing echo chambers are more like laser resonance cavities, while the left's is more like a noisy bar with shiatty acoustics.)

Reagan

Pat Robertson was the first symptom, Reagan was their first actual victory. For my money the anti-intellectuals became unstoppable on Super Tuesday 2000, when Bush won twelve of sixteen states. Super Tuesday had been invented in 1980 to artificially boost moderates early on, so the more extreme candidates could drop out with dignity and have time to kiss the ring before they could cause another 1968 Democratic Convention. When Bush curb stomped McCain, that meant that the anti-intellectual evangelicals had become the "moderates" of the Republicans.

The US has been fighting anti-intellectualism since the very beginning. What we have accomplished in this country has been done in spite of woo, superstition, distrust, bigotry, and rejection of authority.

The Orange Menace tapped into that by undermining everything the anti-intellectuals hate from the inside. The ultimate irony is that if the anti-intellectuals got their way their distrust of authority would have resulted in authoritarianism.

...every failed candidacy fails in its own way, and in the case of Goldwater's there were two major wounds. The first was self-inflicted. Goldwater's inclination to shoot straight did not waver even when he was aiming at his own foot. "You know, I haven't got a really first-class brain," he once told the columnist Stewart Alsop, who obligingly printed the remark (and Alsop was a Republican). Perlstein doesn't mention that one, but there were plenty more Goldwater moments. Goldwater advocated, or uttered words giving the clear appearance that he advocated, using atomic weapons to defoliate the jungle covering the Ho Chi Minh Trail, giving NATO commanders discretion to use nuclear bombs as they saw fit, and making Social Security voluntary-a fairly far-out position to take at a time when the New Deal generation was still the dominant voting block. He proved so gifted at exposing his most alarming instincts that it was practically unnecessary for his opponent to attack him.
