Honnold has a malformed amygdala, and some deep, deep, mental health issues. It's documented in Free Solo, which Sender Films absolutely ignores.

The guy they did the movie the Alpinist about, had obviously severe personality disorder. Sender Films pushed and hounded him to film him soloing, and he died in an avalanche.

In rock climbing, we celebrate these people for being absolutely reckless, celebrating their mental illness as though it's enabling them to do "great things." It's not. It's reckless and stupid.

Free solo takes an already pointless and dumb sport that is inherently selfish, and makes it even more so.

I really wish, as a sport, climbing would stop celebrating free soloists and start questioning what the fark is wrong with them.

Free Solo: it's not a matter of if they're gonna die, it's farking when.

Yeah pretty much. And what's really frustrating is a lot of these big name climbers die doing utterly stupid shiat. Like, when Brad Gobright farking rappelled off the end of his rope while simul-rapelling. Just cuz you climb 5.14 trad doesn't mean a goddamn thing when it comes to safety. That's why Brad ended up as a split on a ledge.

in the film, he admits to having depression. The CT scans from the film also highlight the small amygdala, which is known to cause Borderline Personality Disorder. His personality disorder is apparent too, through his behavior. it's become rather narcissistic, since he's become a millionaire.  Magnus Mitdbo recently visited Honnold in Vegas to do some bouldering videos. Honnold instead decided to have Magnus do free soloing, which he obviously was not at all comfortable with at any point. So putting people unnecessarily at risk. And then there's the Dunning-Kruger on display during the Nobel talk.

I'm not a climber, but I respect the hell out of anybody willing to test themselves while leaving no margin for error. I'm intrigued by those who are a little different and though they might not be entirely normal upstairs and not people I'd like to know personally, the world would be a pretty boring place if everybody was the same. Good on those who go their own way.

Their deaths result in SAR resources having to go in and attempt rescue or recovery. Their deaths don't just happen without engagement of other resources, putting other people at risk. SAR people shouldn't have to put their lives on the line because some asshole decided to free solo and went splat on a ledge, and his family needs their remains recovered for insurance purposes.

Jelly? Geez dude. Magnus is a 33 year old climber of some renown and he posted the freakin' video himself. I'm pretty sure he did it on purpose. Given that he has been climbing for many years and still breathes I reckon he's a big boy and doesn't climb when he doesn't want to climb.

I've only ever indoor rock climbed, with secure safety attachments, and even that has my fight or flight receptors going off for dear life.

I can't help but marvel at people who do obviously extremely short term or longer term dangerous things for sport.  Vert skaters, BMX, these rock climbers.  Bodybuilders who treat themselves like pharmaceutical guinea pigs to put on mass.

Its a level of crazy that I can't comprehend but i'm glad they're out there for my amaze and amusement.

How the f*ck do you know what someones motivation is? Are you a doctor? Have you met these people? Perhaps they are people who have worked their ass of at something (climbing is absolutely useless, but I regard it as art, my opinion) and have a level of mastery which makes something that is terrifying to someone routine and casual. Being able to third class terrain well below your leading ability is a skill every climber should possess and practice as it could save your life.

% of SAR time/money used specifically for that reason? Data?

Yep, search and rescue cleans up an occasional dead soloist. Pretty f*cking rare. No different than someone driving off a mountain road, or getting greased in an avalanche.
