Many adults too.

YouTube both sucks, and is essential.

At least the number of far right commercials I get, just because I watch news sites, has gone down.  YouTube finally fixed THAT at least.

Spending too much time on it would definitely be a concern, but is subby implying they'd be better off of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.?

I'm a young spry 48 and I am pretty much on Youtube all day.  Mostly for dog vids and true crime.  Helps that I work from home.

Uh, I think you missed my point. The way the headline is written is suggesting that youtube is worse than other social media sites.

I'm almost 50 and I'm on Youtube constantly too. I definitely watch more content on Youtube than TV shows and movies combined. My Youtube Premium subscription is well used.

We're probably watching slightly different things, but it doesn't seem weird to me for them to favor Youtube so much over the other sites. There's a lot of great content on Youtube, and much of it being made by regular people and small operations. Sure Youtube's getting paid, but so are those small content creators - could be your neighbor!

There's content I want on there and it also feels nice to help fund regular folks making interesting stuff rather than just shoveling more cash onto the giant green mountains over at Disney Corp or Warner Bros Discovery.

Yup. We've got solid examples of people complaining about "the kids these days" back to 625 BC. It's especially prevalent among humans with authoritarian mindsets (whose voices traditionally have been structurally amplified in American society).

It has always been bullshiat. Still is. We were they, and they are us but younger. Their authoritarian minded brethren will say the same shiat when they're our age, and they'll be just as wrong.

This is thought provoking. Speaking as someone who saw the whole thing, I can say that we USED TO think that choice is what people need, and that given the choice, people will dig themselves out of ignorance. But it is a mixed bag. I have seen some real stupid on the internet, and on YouTube.

I have all kinds of opinions, but here is one you won't see much. It is possible that the best YouTube has a sweetspot of about 50k views to about 500k and maybe a million. Videos that are lower than that probably have less than useful ideas or bad presentation. Videos that get much higher than that are basically click bait plagiarism or Baby Shark nonsense. Just my opinion.

But that explains the best and worst of YouTube. TOO POPULAR is schlock. NOT POPULAR means that someone might not deserve an audience.

Now apply this to conventional media, and you find everyone racing for popularity, which is a race for a lowest common denominator, which is a race to the bottom.

Choice has not solved any problem. We used to think it would solve all of the problems.

While disagreeing with the attributed traits, I'll thank you for the link as it was an interesting read. I wasn't able to go through all of it but it is nice to confirm that the "When I was a kid" sentiment is anything but new, not that I believed it to be but I was unaware of just how long ago it has been expressed.

I got burned out mom Ozzy man, but his destination farked videos and animals fight back videos are always gold.

Can I add My Mechanics to your list?  So soothing.

Even if you're not a mountain bike, Berm Peaks is fun and Seth running it seems like a genuinely cool person.

Yep.  I've used to fix my car, landscape my backyard, get better at cooking with cast iron, and catch up on Algebra and Statistics with Khan Academy videos when I decided to finish my Bachelor's as an adult who had been out of high school for a very long time.

It's also the best place for music videos with MTV being a teen reality show crapfest.
