As good as it is, logically this show has to be near the end of it's lifespan.  Too much longer it will have to start mocking itself.

After the last two seasons, my expectations are lowered.

I could watch three hours of rick and Morty every year in perpetuity. If I get a few funny moments I'm good. I'm looking for a 20 minute mindless diversion, not an ethos.

Don't they still have like 60+ episodes left under their contract or something?  They'll be around for a while.

Same. I've seen some of the hemming and hawing online, along with the usual Internet hyperbole -- "the last season was trash," blah blah blah -- but the show seems the same as it's always been, which is to say, it's 20 minutes of insane and outlandish weirdness.

If the novelty has worn off, well, that'll happen. You can only see "this is shocking and edgy" so many times before it stops being edgy and shocking. Anything with that kind of vibe will eventually hit a "been there, done that' wall.

But that's on the viewer,

I don't care about the show's continuity or connections or ongoing story, never did, nor do I need it to one-up itself or shock me or whatever.

Just give me brief bursts of zany science fiction adventures with an edgelord vibe and the show will be giving me all that's ever mattered about it. The idea that it's anything more than that has always been something for the weirdo superfans who make you not want to wear R&m shirts in public.

Normal people just want to laugh at what an asshole Rick is and Morty's horror as they laser aliens into goo or whatever.

I will continue to watch R&M because I still find it fun and laugh, but IMO Solar Opposites has surpassed it. I enjoy the fact that they maintain a status-quo among the main group while having an arc in the Wall subplot. Keeps it far less depressing that what Rick & Morty gets into.

They've been running on fumes for the last two seasons. Some good episodes, but mostly blah and a few painfully bad ones. It's no surprise that  their ratings dropped off a cliff last season.

shoegaze99: Same. I've seen some of the hemming and hawing online

I'll just say I'm a thousand times more sick of hemming and hawing online than I am Rick and Morty. It's funny. It's fun. It's occasionally thoughtful and provocative. It will be fun to see some new episodes. I'm not much of an edgelord.

I don't know if it's gotten worse necessarily.  It's just no longer new.  I still enjoy it and look forward to the new season, but I get why it's not as popular as it was.  Also, I think part of that was reaction to Rick and Morty fans, who can be absolutely insufferable.

They could go batshiat. I mean Pickle Rick was batshiat. But so were the wall people episodes of Solar Opposites. Almost all of 12oz Mouse. The alternative reality seasons of Archer. The latest season of Harley Quinn could be good. And I have to re-read Preludes & Nocturnes before getting into Sandman.

Finally started watching the show (I know, I know). Through first two seasons. While I really like it, I don't get the... I don't know... superfans I guess. Really entertaining show and all but it didn't change my life or anything.

Nah, he's not wrong. I wouldn't say running on fumes but holy crap were there at least 2 episodes from last season that should have just been stopped at the storyboarding.

Last season is about as consistent as it's ever been with 1 or 2 that are classic and a bunch around average but christ did they lower the bar for whats considered a bad episode

The alien plots on SO are boring and mindless.  The stuff in the Wall is pretty damn engaging, and I think they know it because this last season saw an increase in Wall time.  Unfortunately, there was also a decrease in how compelling those Wall stories were.  Maybe that's just me.

Both the show and the superfans had flown under my radar when I discovered the show. A friend introduced me to it while I was visiting him. We spent a hungover morning watching the first season and I loved it. (It was kind of ideal for that situation.)

I didn't discover until later that there was a segment of fandom who took it really seriously and somehow thought it was a show catering to the uber intelligent. That idea is .. weird.

/we've all seen that copypasta by now, right?

It's the same thing that happened with Archer.  In the beginning, before you knew the characters, it was one giddy WTF situation after another.  Several seasons later, you can no longer be shocked by anything Pam might possibly do.

The show is all over the place in a good way. Some is trippy like is Beth really a clone with implanted memories?  Some is just good sci fi like evil Morty arc (with great soundtracks from Eagles and Blonde Redhead) (that's not a sentence I'd ever expect to utter, about the Eagles, saw Blonde Redhead in Redhook, good show. Some is goofy like interdimensional TV. Some just good writing like pickle Rick and the mall therapist. Occasionally kinda meh like the aquaman episode. Or sad like Jerry getting mugged by a stray dog.

THIS

Fun as hell, but it's not 'that' great either. The Simpsons, South Park best is better than R&M's best. But trailing those two's best is pretty damn good.

Kinda felt the same way about The Office. People wrote full statistical thesis breakdowns of that show. I don't think I can like a show that much.

I'm glad people like things.

That's the thing though: What I want is 'mindless'. I have more than enough shows (and cartoons) wanting me to maintain their canon, make me think/contemplate, and provide growth/tragedy.

Give them crazy situations and watch it reset by the end. It's It's Always Sunny in the bullshiat-sci-fi genre. I love the 4th-wall breaking/shiatting on Hulu. I love the random, sometimes completely far-out, references.

Rick and Morty has become almost unwatchable to me. The characters are all horrible and hate each other. Whatever thin premise it held of a suburban family is gone.
Everything is turned up to 11 all the time.

Solar Opposites, however, is fun.

They definitely ripped away a lot of the veneer, and the seasons where Beth just had open, malicious contempt for Jerry were hard to take. It didn't feel funny, just mean. But it seems like they've sort of taken care of that, at least. It does feel like the characters are all sliding toward Rick's cynical nihilism a bit too much--without anything to balance that, some of the episodes have been pretty bleak, and not in a fun way.

I still greatly enjoy it, though.

It's gotten worse. Not every episode in the first three seasons were hits, but none were outright bad.

Season 4 and 5 had some stinkers so bad that I don't get how the episodes made it into production, like the Dragon and Turkey episodes. It seems like they're out of ideas and just went with bad episodes because they had nothing else.

So this thread got me to watch Solar Opposites and it's so much better than Rick and Morty. It's kinda like a evolved, better written version of it without the horrible characters and non-stop nihilism. I've been laughing pretty consistently every episode.

2022-08-11 10:35:24 PM

thornhill: Turkey episodes.

The Turkey episode was the best of the season, narrowly edging out the Decoy Family episode. You're telling me the Turkey episode was somehow worse than the Captain Planet or Space Incest Baby episodes?

Solar Opposites must have gotten much better, because that first season was meh.

Anyway, looking forward to more Rick and Morty.

Love the show but lately it has a lot of writers going very in depth on concepts that really only scriptwriters could care about with ins and outs of story structure.

But when it's good, it's great

I honestly wish there were more of the wall colony.  it's delightfully creepy and really what I think would happen with alien abductions.  "just throw them in there...we'll deal with them later"

I wish the new season would be much than the previouse one.The last one was a fail.  Are you looking forward for more Rick and Morty?
