This is what happens when you ignore most of your constitutents and only focus on the loud obnoxious ones.  But this is fine, I hope it kills their party.

TFA says only 34% of Republicans oppose it.  So no worries, really, on that score.  It's getting votes from non-Republican-cultists that's the problem.

"We've given our studio audience the choice, they can either walk away with an extra $100 in their pocket, each, tonight or, they can vote to watch me eat this dog turd!.... and.... the dog turd is leading? Let me remind the audience that's an extra $100 you could have to spend on anything you want, anything at all. It's your's... the dog turd is still leading... really, that's like over $10,000 we're offering to just give away tonight, free and clear. We could even give it to you in cash... and, you're still voting for the dog turd. WHY ARE YOU VOTING AGAINST YOUR OWN INTERESTS?!? Well, the votes are being counted... and it's.... dog turd.

I think I heard someone demand a recount? No? Ok, well, I'm demanding a recount... and... there are actually even more votes for dog turd. I guess you really want me to eat this dog turd..." *wets lips, gags on smell*

You jackass got what you wanted, now people are going to get it, and people are going to die because of it, but apparently we've elected to learn from experience instead of by warning. And it frustrates the every loving hell out of me that innocent people are going to suffer because of this malicious ignorance and cruelty, but these people will not learn through any other method besides brutality, the only language of education when you refuse logic, discourse and study.

Just glad I don't live in an area where I'll have to be close to it when it happens. Just remember, as the brutality unfolds, this is what you voted for by installing men or cruelty and women of ignorance in positions of power to rule you.

Devolving_Spud: Blame Democrats?

Well, none of this would have happened if Obama hadn't let the GOP prevent Merrick Garland from being appointed to the Supreme Court. And if Hillary Clinton had run a better campaign, Donald Trump wouldn't have been able to swing the Supreme Court's balance. Which in turn wouldn't have emboldened the GOP to abandon their dog whistles and openly embrace paranoid conspiracy theories, fascism, and theocracy. So, really, for all intensive purposes, there's no way to not say it's Democrats' fault, if you really think about it. I mean really really think about it.

I'm torn between "What the fark did they think was going to happen?" and "This is exactly what they wanted to happen, but for some reason I just can't for the life of me put my finger on, they couldn't predict that it would come back to bite them on the ass."

Either way, fark the GOP in every orifice, and when every orifice is full, tear open some new ones.

South Carolina Rep. Micah Caskey (R) is frustrated by people who think he's not doing enough for the anti-abortion cause. "I'm told that a year ago I was a crazy fanatic for supporting a six-week ban, and now the goal post has been moved such that if I don't support a complete and total ban whatsoever that I'm not pro-life?" he told Politico.

What a whiney biatch.  He cultivated extremists and now he's upset that their extremism is affecting him in only the most minor ways?

Kind of like cutting taxes and then blaming Democrats when deficits shiat the bed.

I'm trying to find the article for it but can't. Anyway - gist is that the GOP's policies are so terrible and so unpopular that a significant portion of the population flatly believe that a major political party could support such shiatty views and somehow survive. So they assume claims the GOP support these atrocious ideas are exaggerated.

Until they very suddenly get enacted into law...

What did they do during prohibition, which had some very racist, tribal, and protestant roots?

Of course this time they are literally driving all doctors, not just ob/gyn doctors from their states.  Their alliance with those who destroy public health and knock down pollution laws is not without consequence.  Their vilification of immigrants of all skills and needs has made child and elder care very expensive.

Ramming a minority right wing culture down the throat of the unsuspecting and unwilling, destroying beneficial institutions on the way.  Maybe, like Biden's Gas Prices, it's out of control and no one can put the genie back in the bottle.

Bingo.  Go ahead and listen to those idiots Thomas and Alito and see what happens.  Hell, go all in and strike down Loving v. Virginia.

I have no idea why the ABA allows people who were "educated" by the Federalist Society to be allowed to practice law.  Anyone who pushes the "strict constructionist" nonsense should only be allowed near a court of law in a janitorial capacity.

My Dad is probably a life-long Republican voter if I had to guess (he doesn't talk about it, ever) but really only for financial reasons I think. The social stuff I don't think he ever cared much about. But he just watched me go through a second trimester termination for medical reasons (fatal chromosomal abnormality) of a very wanted pregnancy. And he was very supportive and understanding of my decision, but he got real quiet when I said I was just happy I lived in a state where I still had options. Not sure how much longer he's going to be a reliable Republican vote.

More precisely, when the stakes were low, and it looked like Roe v Wade was never going to be overturned, people would vote for Republicans for other reasons (taxes, "liberals say the darnest things", whatever).  But when the shiat got real they were all...we didn't mean for you actually do the things you've been trying to do...

...and this didn't even require the overturning of Roe v Wade (it was a later term abortion, longer than the limit in that state (Indiana?), plus a doctor didn't do it (self abortion is illegal in that state too)).

This is what happens when you let religious fanatics have a say in other people's lives.

They're rigid, self righteous, nosy, interfering and they think they've got god's mandate. They won't take no for an answer until they are so badly humiliated by what they've done they crawl back to their churches and pitch their fire and brimstone to the rascal scooter crowd.

I see so many similarities between banning abortion and alcohol prohibition. The drys fought for over 40 years to get prohibition passed, including appealing to racism, anti immigration, anti Catholic and anti semitism. They got the rural hilljacks on their side and wouldn't listen to reason. They're completely blinded by their own fanaticism to see the consequences of their actions.

After the 18th amendment was repealed they never tried it again. It took a lot of very public carnage and destruction to get to that point.

100 years later, here we go again. But now it's the 21st century. They're going to find that trying to grip Gen Z is going to be like gripping sand.

2022-08-11 1:16:52 PM
I thought this was common knowledge. With the exception of some dyed-in-the-wool "pro-life" (anti-rights) elected republicans, the majority wanted to cosplay at it and secure that base vote-no harm if the law can't be enforced anyway they said. Now they are at the find out part and some realize it may cost them their jobs. If not for gerrymandering, I would even expect some deep red states to go purple. IDK, it's all speculative.

Hispanics and even African Americans have aspects of their culture that are socially conservative (mainly due to religious influences).  If the Republicans weren't such blatant racists, they would have an honest shot winning over large numbers of both.

But they are racists, so they don't.

Republicans will do what they always do when they are responsible for something wildly unpopular and potentially politically damaging.

They will first try to find away to blame the bad thing on Democrats or liberals.  This is obviously preposterous, but remember the power of motivated reasoning.  There are many people on their side eager to buy into any story they try to sell, no matter how specious.  Plus many people are just poorly informed on the issues and susceptible to misinformation about who is to blame.

If the above doesn't work, they will try to change the subject.  They are very good at this.  Get ready for weeks of non-stop coverage on Fox of migrant caravans.
