The free match and 2nd player modes must have been there for debugging. It is cool that it was left in the production ROM. I figured that would have been patched out prior to release.

Not true. Once in college, I walked into a lounge area in my dorm and got deja vu for the first time ever. A minute later, a friend walked in from outside and the same thing happened to him.
