As a kid I wanted to discover a comet, but putting in those thousands of hours to scan the sky an eyepiece field at a time was problematic. Now there are automated surveys that cover the entire sky every few days.

Last great comet hunter?  Really?   Here's me on the right a week ago with a guy who discovered or co-discovered 23 comets including the one that smashed into Jupiter in 1994.

Good to see David is doing well!  I met him back in '04-'05 when his eclipse-chasing brought him to Hawaii for a partial solar eclipse into sunset atop Maunakea.  Great guy.
