A man went into a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Florida and fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and her friend before turning the gun on himself

A bunch of junkies (as a drunk, I use the term in the most respectful way possible) in the same room, probably in withdrawals, I'm surprised this doesn't happen somewhere every week.

Most of them don't seem to be violent. Just broken people who've used drugs far too long to hide emotional pain.

A few years ago, I almost got my 30 day chip but by that point even my SA counselor was like "Go smoke a bowl, Peki." I was using cannabis for sleep and it was obvious I actually needed it as medicine at the time.

The problem with not believing that there's a higher power is the proof that for years the chemicals were a higher power. Believing that you sit on top of the food chain is the first step into (falsely) believing that you can control it "this time."

Eh. You can take the higher power thing to a religious angle if you want.

But I've also seen a higher power be described as something as simple as a doorknob. It's whatever you need to appeal to in order to not use that day. Does a doorknob need to use? No, because it sits there and waits until it's needed and then does its job.

I know 12 step programs catch a lot of flak, and rightly so, but if it works for someone, like hell Imma tell them they are wrong.

Ah, yes....I've been told crap like "it can be anything you want!" from counselors and sponsors.  "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity".....yes, a doorknob is a power greater than myself that can restore me to sanity.

Face it....12 step programs require a "person of faith" to work.  If you're a person of faith and the 12 steps work for you, great!  Welcome to your new life!

My concern is the people like me for whom the 12 steps just seem like the "white paper" of a cult.  It took me a long time for me to find what worked for me, and hearing "you just need to surrender to your higher power" made me want to smash faces.  Cheerful, smiling faces.

LOL

I hear you. Like I mentioned upthread, it didn't work for me either, because I wasn't really an addict and legit needed medication. I was getting worse and worse after 29 days while after two weeks of sobriety everyone else started to look better.

But it's helped a number of friends of mine. So like you said: if it works for you, great. But it's not for everyone. Ultimately if someone wants to quit and is ready to, they'll quit, 12 step program or not.

12-step programs meet some but not even most or all of the criteria for being a cult.
They are absolutely religious they have a Dogma and they have a god.  saying higher power wink wink nudge nudge does not make it any less God.

That said most of the people there are earnest and sincere and want to help you.  they serve a useful purpose especially for those new to sobriety.
When you no longer need what they are offering stop going.  " take what you need and leave the rest"

If you're there on paper sorry about your luck and your First Amendment. You'll find a meeting in most towns that will call for anybody who's there on paper at the beginning of the meeting and sign the paper so you can leave.  they don't want you there if you don't want to be there

And regarding Narcotics Anonymous specifically every meeting I've been to is just been a bunch of euphoric recall.

What else but a higher power makes the body behind up tolerance to substances thus making enjoyment end? Call it what you want, the issue is you have to accept your pal "happy use" had a limited span of time to be enjoyed.  The party is over.  It's out of your hands.
