A) Play for the Detroit Lions
B) Retire

Choose wisely.

Three UDFAs - two at really deep positions and one who just wasn't going to make an NFL roster - and a backup defensive lineman who's been fighting calcium deposits the size of chicken hearts in his shoulders.  Nothing out of the ordinaryz

None of them were going to make an NFL roster and they don't get paid for preseason so I'd imagine those kids are just making a reasonable and responsible financial decision.

Or, I can adjust my tinfoil hat and say this is all a ploy by HBO to drum up interest in Hard Knocks, premiering tonight at 10 pm!!

Yeah, but what about the Lions?

Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson both retired early from the Lions.  Both made the Hall of Fame.  Shoot your shot!

Early retirements like this always happen in training camp. Guys realize they just don't have what it takes, or they have injuries that come up during intensive training and/or treatment and so on. Hope all goes well for the guys.

I've never watched 'Hard Knocks', what should I expect? Is it overly melodramatic or scripted feeling?

There has yet to be a single team who liked having them there, but you have to be objectively terrible (it's in the NFL contract) to get saddled with the show. It is a very mixed bag but also an interesting behind the scenes look.

Jerry Jones LOVES having the Cowboys on the show, even if his coaches dont. However, the rules for who gets picked are (per the NFL)

"The league still will ask for volunteers. If one is not forthcoming, a team will be appointed. All organizations will be eligible with the exception of those that have a first-year head coach; teams that have made the playoffs in at least one of the last two seasons; and teams that have participated in the previous 10 seasons."

As for the show itself, its not scripted, but they do tend to pick a player or two to focus on throughout the shows run. Usually they focus on a star or other player with a back story (returning from injury, had a breakout season last year, etc) and they'll focus on a guy or two thats competing to start or fighting for a roster spot. Overall, its an interesting look into how teams run their training camps and you'll usually get one good soundbite from each season (ie: Jameis Winston "Eat a W" speech or Jeff Fisher's "7-9 bullshiat" quote.)

For the Lions this season, I expect they will focus on Hutchinson since he's the big swinging dick this year, and they'll probably focus on Goff as well. And they'll pick a couple scrubs to follow, usually a late round draft pick and a UFA trying to make the 53 man roster.

I guess we can use this for the hard knocks episode

Jamaal Williams is my dude. Wow... I knew he was passionate but damn he was on fire. I also liked the love/hate between Deuce and Glenn. That was a lot of fun!
