A friend who is allergic to cats once said it was his experience that if there's a crowd and there's a cat in the room, it's going to come to him.  His thinking was that the cat wants to be with the crowd, but doesn't necessarily want to be touched and fussed over, and the Allergic Guy is perfect because he's the guy that won't touch the cat.  "I don't hate the cat, and I'm not showing it any aggression, I just won't touch it.  I think that's why they come to me."

For cats blinking is a greeting, for humans squinting is a sign you don't like something.

A cat will absolutely interpret it as a greeting

/also cats love to mess with people because it's fun so....

My cat just wants my attention when it wants fed.

More specifically, it's a signal that you're not a threat (as you're closing your eyes and lowering your defenses).

That wasn't my experience. If you truly befriend a cat it will never leave you alone and will want to be on you all the time. It will be annoyed when you aren't interested.

yes.
my honey is kind of anti-animal. they are cute, at a distance, not getting fur, flees, or slobber on you.
While i'm a sucker for all the critters.

So of course when we walk i stop to pet all the cats, but they ignore me and try to go get attention from her instead.

My little old lady is about 15 now, never much of a snuggle cat. I've always been fairly hands off with her - hey, she's a woman, and I let her do what she wants (for the most part)! So now as she's getting older, she enjoys spending more time with me, sitting with me or on my lap. She doesn't do this with the SO, who is more prone to grabbing her and trying to hold/hug her or giving her kisses.

I just let her do her thing, and sometimes ask nicely if she wants to hang out. I don't hold it against her if she doesn't want to (although I really, really would like a snuggle cat).

Why do they often say cats don't like to be touched at the base of the tail? Every cat I've ever had has gone crazy happy when you scritched or petted the base of their tail, often with accompanying elevator butt to give you better access. Are my cats all broken?

Ok, there's a chance Gustav might be missing some screws.

All of mine do that too, but then all of mine also love belly rubs as well.

I'd say it's useless to try and generalize about cat behavior, the same way it is about people.

The current trio are all about the belly rubs, but before that, my cat tended to get bellicose from belly rubs.
