Good on her.

OK, but I'm not taking down my Serena *or* Venus posters.

Amazing player.  Hope she is given space to do whatever she wants in retirement without being bothered.

I feel bad for lazy sportswriters.  The loss of Serena will deprive them of gossipy questions to ask Naomi Osaka.

Superb tennis player. Annoying human being. Glad she's finally leaving.

\Venus needs to hang it up as well.

Venus, while older and creakier, doesn't have as much going on outside of tennis as Serena does, so I could easily see her still going until she just absolutely can't.

COACHING IS ILLEGAL!!!

*is she gone now??*

Coaching is now allowed.

lol... So many stupid things about tennis. But she absolutely dominated their lily-white sport and destroyed all comers. (Yes, I know... many diverse players... but it's still a country club sport in the fandoms and executive level)

She kicked their ass and made her mark... Nicely done. Enjoy whatever you do next.

And to all those doing the "But she has such and attitude..." If you had to put up with 10% of the bullsh*t she did, you'd cry and quit life.

so, one last chance to shove a tennis ball down a US Open linesperson's farking throat.

I mean, maybe people will remember that other American woman who crushes Serena in every other stat. Career victories, career singles titles, career singles/doubles combined. But I guess GS singles titles are the only stat that matters.

Venus has been done done for a couple years. Lost to Jill Teichmann 2 and 3 last night, wasn't that close.

Martina?

Almost certainly. 354 total titles, but only 32 GS. It is her and not Court that set the bar for women's tennis.

Yes? I mean, the only argument Serena stans seem to have is "in an imaginary head to head Serena would win". Which is barely above "my dad can beat up your dad" in the scale of sports debate. Only counting Grand Slam singles is basically the only way Serena matches up statistically.

I'm on your side, plus Martina had a much tougher set of opponents over her career than Serena had.

Today in Toronto Serena Williams played her first match since her retirement announcement. Lots of fanfare, lots of cheers and 'We love you Serena!' signs from the crowd. And, of course, the announcers did the whole career recap, Greatest Of All Time commentary/comparisons, etc. All quite nice and kinda moving.

The she proceeds to lose in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. She looked slow and old.

Afterwards she received some flowers, said a few words, got a standing ovation, and shedded a few tears.

And I'm torn between relief that she finally called it quits and sad and annoyed that her skills have dropped to the point where it's difficult watching her play.
