So basically:

Old and busted: "You're a bad parent if you don't monitor your children's activities on the Internet because there are a lot of creeps and trolls and bullies out there!"
New hotness: "You're a bad parent if you monitor your children's activities on the Internet and report suspicious accounts because you're snitching on the Internet!"

Riiiiiiight.

Subby ran out of room for "I am very intelligent."

We can all be in abusive personal relationships now.  Let Snapchat show you the way.

Ok, I'll bite.  When did reporting creeps, groomers, stalkers, and bullies go back to us punishing and/or telling the victim that it's their problem & to suck it up?

There're lots of places I want individuals to have freedom, privacy, and democracy unimpinged by the heavy hand of surveillance & external monitoring.

My kid's phone and social media is not one of those places. I'll creep like a big ol' creeper on their posts, calls, texts, location, all of it if I need or wish to and make zero apologies for it.

Hell, it's not even her phone, it's mine.

GregInIndy: Hell, it's not even her phone, it's mine.

Ran into this one the other day with 13, shouting at me that she bought her phone with "her money."

We drop bio-dad's child support into checking and savings accounts for the girls. It's done a decent job of encouraging them to think about saving money, which is nice. But it's barely "her money."

But I acquiesced and let her keep her phone, then smiled as she watched me make about 8 taps on my phone to turn off her cell service and block her phone from the wifi for a week.

I try to find a balance on the social media usage. Lots of talks about proper behavior, and even more on security and safety. I'm not snooping on them daily, but the benefit of being regularly open and honest with my kids is that they are terrible liars.

Nimbull: Or just shutdown Snapchat and save all the hassle in the first place.

Snapchat has become my communication service of compromise.

I don't give out my phone number to people. SMS messaging is completely off the table.
WhatsApp, Discord and Facebook Messenger have terms of service I won't agree to.

Apple people have an aneurysm if you suggest any Microsoft or Google communication product.
No one under 30 wants to send or look at Email.

My Signal account isn't connected to my real phone number, but when I suggest Signal, the conversation turns in to the question of why I'm unwilling to just use SMS. Telegram has the same issue but I don't like the Telegram people anyway so that can fark right off as well.

That more or less just leaves Snap.

Even if it were genuinely her phone I'd still be all up in it as needed. I'm in charge of and responsible for her. Nothing is out of my bounds.

My kids are great & extremely trustworthy. But if I need such tools they're all at the ready. Welcome to modern parenting.

I have a free Google phone # for just such occasions and use it a lot.

I also have Google Voice but I only use it for shiatty things that don't give an option other than SMS for 2 factor authentication. I don't want to have to actually pay attention to it otherwise.

Snapchat is doing just that, by doing this. The kids will just leave in droves.

I question the efficacy of using a cast iron pan to fry an egg over. My cast iron pan is pretty slick at this point, but I doubt I could do an over easy egg on it without having to basically deep fry it. The last time I cooked eggs in it, they stuck pretty good, though it was scrambled eggs, which could be the difference.

I barely use mine these days and certainly not for typical stove top cooking.

Deep frying, Steaks (in winter), frittatas... hmmm, not much else

That sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, most anything I make in it is because it's gonna go into the oven. These days that's rarely.
