Mugato: Palantir, is that from Lord of the Rings or something?

Yes, the name of the company comes from the mystical scrying orbs in LotR.

For those not in the know, Palantir was founded by Peter Thiel, libertarian shiathead and person in the running for "one of the worst people in the world." It is a "defense intelligence technology" company and as a private company, basically spies on people for money.

It happens to be a darling of WSB/moonbros because of its stock performance.

Well that's what you get for messing with something a giant flaming eyeball has bound to his will.

It's stock performance being roughly analogous to the tranjectory of a ballistic missile, with most likely a very similar conclusion.

Seriously, how the fark does a defense contractor and private military supplier manage to lose so much money so consistently?

It's their business model. They spend millions and millions on customer acquisition. If the customer sticks around, it's huge revenue essentially forever, but their costs are really high. It's would actually be a great business if it were possible to ignore all the ethical implications... a lot of people can, I suppose.
