Apparently words will, eh Cale? This is stupid, no matter what word he read.

Is it just me or does it seem like there is about to be more to this story?  Like if it was indeed just accidentally reading it out loud I gotta imagine an immediate self report, with an apology and some kind of fine/suspension/sensitivity training would have made it seem like a non issue and a one time mistake.

Well maybe after one time but after the fifth time all bets are off.  Then with the bullhorn was over the line.

No discipline for the dumbass player who was farking around instead of paying attention and had NWA lyrics on his iPad?

What happened to the player who had the word "Belgium" on his IPad? Has he faced any consequences, or is he just a fourth-stringer who will walk away?

Kudos to Gundy for accepting responsibility (although I think he's taking too much responsibility here), but what about the actual source of the bad word? Is the university actually off the hook if one of the players doesn't face punishment?

I don't really follow college football, but here's my shiatty take anyway:
I think that this was a new Head Coach who wanted him gone, and possibly a receiver (I believe he's a receivers coach) who doesn't like him or maybe is mad he isn't getting more playing time or passes, or is just pissed about getting called out in a meeting, and says something about it.
Head Coach sees his chance to get rid of the asst Coach, tells him to resign or be fired.

Or, maybe his brother offered him a job at OSU?

Or, wealthy donor who is paying the player who got called out under the table, got wind of what happened, and wanted him gone.

Whether or not he should have resigned, that is a surprisingly sincere statement in the era of nonpologies. No attempts to deflect or justify. Just "I did it, I didn't mean to do it, but since it happened, it's on me." Weird.

Nope, nothing more at all, he just "did not even realize" what he was reading. Like this:

The way this is presented is completely idiotic. Someone isn't being completely honest about the situation. If it went down as represented, he could have just been embarrassed and apologized to the team members in the room and they would have thought it was the funniest event of the day.

Something else is at play here.

Yup, it's definitely the funniest event of the day when a white guy drops an N-word.

Absolutely hilarious.

This is sarcasm, by the way.

This is a weird one, not sure if he pissed off the head coach, big donor or someone else but after reading the original local version of the story it struck me there is a lot more to this.  As for the player, it will be taken care internally I imagine or if it a 3rd of 4th string guy he maybe gone already.

Alot to unpack here, first off we are given zero indication of what the word was or even it's meaning other that is must have been pretty bad.

Secondly we have no info on what for the text he read off the player's Ipad, was it something the player wrote, was it in a text message the player received?  Seems as if we may never know.

While i am totally for taking personal responsibility i feel more investigation should have been undertaken before accepting the man in question's  resignation.

Context matters and art gets (and should get) more leeway when it comes to language in general and the N-word specifically.  No one gives Elvis Costello or Queen shiat for using the N-word.

People are going to be saying, "Who's that blackie?" Or your teammates will say things like, "I'm not going to throw the ball to Blackie!" Or, "I'm not going to catch the throw FROM Blackie!"

The internet rumor I heard was that he did do a self-report, but take it with whatever weight an internet rumor should have.

But I am with you.  If it was a "quit texting during video study or I will take that phone/tablet and read it out loud to the whole team!" moment gone awry, with an awkward silence and a heartfelt apology and self-report, then it should pretty much be a non-issue.  Certainly nothing to destroy the career of a man who has worked there for 20+ years without other (known) incidents.

So, either OU overreacted or there is more to the story than is known.  Either is possible, but I'd lean toward the latter.

Hard to say exactly what was going on with this team, but if a coach read aloud the N word that a player was reading silently, jimmies got unreasonably rustled.

The story doesn't really add up. He says he started reading and was "horrified" by what he read. He also says he read it aloud several times. If it caught him by surprise the first time and he didn't really want to say it out loud, why would he do it multiple times?

A fit of rage might make sense.  He maybe didn't process what he had done/said until after his BP dropped to sane levels, even if all he did was repeat something off a screen that a player was texting or had texted to him and didn't call anyone any names specifically.

But then, a fit of rage isn't much of a defense because you also shouldn't be having those.  You might expect a call from HR after something like that.

Or, maybe new coach or a university bigwig wanted him gone and took this as an excuse to force the issue.  But all this is speculation.  I expect we will hear more about this as time goes by, because it seems unlikely that all this should just be taken at face value.

The fact that he's from Oklahoma and knows how to read is the bigger story here.
