I'd guess that the person writing the content is not choosing the images. Probably an intern who didn't know what cube steak was, but used it as a search term in the stock photo library and chose that photo because it looked more appetizing than actual cube steak.

Because that's what step one should be.

j/k!

That's wasteful. Step one would be don't buy it.

Chicken fried steak is the easy, obvious answer.
I'd make Swiss steak instead so it's a bit less unhealthy.
1000% agree with everyone above about photo selection.  It's like they let an AI pick the photos based on keywords.

Or...someone in an actual cube being paid min-wage that just didn't give a fark, because giving fark never pays off in a cube a job.

I like a black pepper marinade - you can either get it as a packet or just make it with some on-hand spices/ingredients.

Kind of like a salad dressing - black pepper - vinegar - oil - salt - garlic - dash of msg - onion powder - marinade for as long as you want - I like a few hours to let the acid tenderize em. You could also add some papain for extra tenderizing, but I find it kind of weirds the flavor up.

Then just grill em up.

Another vote for chicken fried steak. Thin batter and breadcrumbs. The answer to any inexpensive cut of meat is also stew.

Over 40 years ago, my guts were a mess. That summer I lived basically on prednisone and jello. (Very slight exaggeration.) To no avail. Despite everything, my gut still went kerflooey and I had to have surgery. So, July through the middle of October: bouillon, Jell-o, prednisone, and bland macaroni. 2 days after the surgery, the hospital fed me swiss steak. I belched the fumes off those green peppers for a week.

I do not begrudge cube steak what people do with it. My wife makes a great country fried steak. With even better sop.

Do we have to do this? Fine.

1) don't buy cube steak

While chicken fried steak is the obvious answer, you can make good old Louisiana grits and grillades with cube steak.  Much more work than chicken fried steak but absolutely delicious.

Chicken fried steak is the obvious answer, but beef schnitzel would also be accepted, as would several recipes of bulgogi (especially bassak bulgogi )

Sear it off hot and fast. Only steak I'll use ketchup with.

Grillades is wayyy easier than chicken fried steak.  If you want to be a redneck just chunk it in a crock pot.

Chicken fried steak with rice and white debris gravy is my jam tho.

Cubed steak is best given a hot take followed by broth or picante sauce.

Swiss steak is cut thin so treat it to a stir fry.

There's another "cubed" steak that's been beaten up to take up breading, but that's another game.

Chicken fried is the obvious answer... however, if you're from Sacky Cackalacky then you might do the less famous "Mustard Fried". It's more popular with venison cube steak, but plenty of folks do it with beef.

Get one cube steak.
Salt and pepper that MFer.
Dredge in cheap-ass yellow mustard.
Dredge in flour.
Fry that MFer up.
Eat with mashed potatoes, collards, or any veg of your choice.

my mom would buy cube steak when i was a boy. mom & dad's priority was having money 1. for bills 2. for alcohol, gambling and entertainment. cube steak was simply horrible. no matter how good your teeth was there was no masticating it. that meat was run under automated shard steel spikes several times to break down the nasty sinewy texture and it didn't work. liver was a pleasure by compare. no dinner at all was better. my mom was a mentally ill woman who cooked everything at 11. every farking meal we had hair would be found in at least 1 side. she died on a Halloween a few years ago. Satan has been running scared ever since.

Sure, Chicken Fried Steak. But I imagine you can get decent results from pressure cooking, and even better from Sous vide (then finishing off the outside with a blowtorch or broiler).

Swiss steak is a recipe for preparing cube steak...I've neve heard the terms used interchangeably.

I lightly brown my cube steak in butter and put it on a hoagie roll with mayo.  Bubble up some beef broth withthe residual bits in the pan and use it as a dipping broth.

Add Tater Tots  on the side for that final touch!

Weird.

Swiss steak is a tomato based dish that cooks slowly and is usually served over rice.

I do love me some minute steaks.  preferrably cooked quick on the grill, coating both sides with whatever spices and seasonings sound good at any given moment.

maybe someday the price will come back down; for me the draw was they were cheaper than ground been in some cases!  much more of a go-to for me a couple years ago, but at this point the red meats are all so expensive that i might as well buy a better cut of meat.

bacon, onions, mustard and pickles? I might try that, although my wife is not fond of mustard.

For reasons I've never figured out, breading anything just doesn't work for me.  Mom never breaded anything either, must be genetic.

I use Alton Brown's recipe for that.  My family loves it but my wife cringes whenever I say I'm making Swiss Steak because her mom use to prepare an abomination with canned gravy that she called "swiss steak."

I always have to remind her that what I'm making is nothing like what her mom made.

Rouladen is great, but if you make it get a real recipe that doesn't use cube steak.

Usually it's labeled cube steak, but this one small local chain, old people grocery store I go to calls it Swiss steak. Maybe it's an old people thing.

The mustard is often a weird thing with meats.  But remember we're going to cook this thing down for a while.  All sorts of interesting chemistry happens when you do that.

American BBQ is a derivative of German cookery, and in BBQ mustard is the go to medium for sticking spices to a pork butt.  Slather it with cheap mustard, then hit it with every spice you think might be acceptable.

After all we put that meat through in the process, you'll never taste it.

Indeed. I've not considered doing a panko/fried onion thing (I think I'd have to do something like 50/50... all fried onion seems a bit too far), but that would probably rock.

I just realized last week that I never notice "cube steak" out here on the Left Coast.

At least not where I shop (Ralphs, Stater Bros).

When I was a kid in the deep South, chicken fried steak with pan gravy was a weekly staple.  It's comfort food.

/and damn right it was served on rice
//well, hell, now I'm on a mission
