Which Metaverse? Facebook/Meta? Roblox? Decentraland? Earth 2? there are many others. Articles online makes it sound like there's only one. Some are wishful thinking for potential profit but due to technological limits look like shiat, others are outright scams.

Ug imagine the stench from some overweight redneck that ate potato salad and drank Michelob light during a day of sweating.

The only way these 3d virtual environments will ever work is if we figure out a way to make it a fully immersive experience. Maybe a full body suit? More likely something plugged directly into the brain.

/ that's a long way off
// and it's only going to be used for fully interactive porn

It's both artificial scarcity and forcing people who purchase Oculus VR products to register as Facebook and meta users even if they don't use those platforms.  So Zuck is on very shaky ground and the stock price reflects this.
Zuck's recent involvement in undermining democracy and promoting hate speech and propaganda would make Goebbels blush.  He's a stochastic terrorist hiding as  a "capitalist".  Hopefully he gets to meet the people he does business with and it involves zip ties and a Saudi "interview".

It's porn. It's always porn.  If some new technology doesn't involve porn, it's going nowhere.  The day after papyrus was invented, someone drew boobs on it.

It's technically limited by server space. But they also artificially limit it to try and increase its "worth".

One thing I was curious about Meta real estate was if it had a system analogous to Snow Crash's metaverse, in which the virtual territory was divided and valued according to its proximity to the intersection of the XY axis. In Snow Crash, the virtual territory closest to (X=0,Y=0) was the most crowded and valuable, like the top results of a Google search, after corporations have paid to have their search parameters optimized. The cheap property was far away from all the action downtown.

Wolfenstein 3D was really 2D - the z axis was basically non-existent - but since the player was stuck in a series of tubes you didn't really notice.  Doom had some z concept and DN3D used portalling tricks to make environments that seemed 3Dish, but those were still 2.5D engines.

Quake was the first actual 3D engine.

I think Decent was probably the first major non 2.5D game. There were a few others as well but mostly small prototypes.

Snow Crash coined the term "Metaverse" but what it was basically describing was social media.

Well for one thing there's a distinct lack of naked people. There are a few cats in the room though so the jury is still out.

3d games are a window you look into. Great for games but no one is having meetings inside of Minecraft let alone paying for virtual office space.

VR barely adds anything other than making it slightly more immersive by strapping the monitor to your face. I'm not saying it isn't successful but it will mainly remain in the realm of gaming and entertainment.

Zuck imagines a world where you go to work in the Metaverse (god, what a stupid name). But the current tech doesn't solve a problem that isn't already solved by a zoom call.
