Do the Chinese think Taiwan was always Chinese, and only Western and Japanese imperialism has denuded them of it?

I find it amazing that Taiwan was part of China for less time than Ireland was ruled from London, and yet no one would seriously suggest that means Ireland belongs to the English. So I have to assume everyone incorrectly believes Taiwan has always been part of China.

Historically, China was the largest cultural power of East Asia. Due to a combination of having a series of corrupt emperor's, European (but not American) imperialism, it went through a dark period. Which got darker in WW2. Then worse under the CCP.

With Deng, China began to rebound, but due to their history, they have a chip on their shoulder a mile wide. They want to return to their ancient domineering ways. More than want though, have a sense of aggrieved entitlement to do so. It's kind of like "the South shall rise again", except real.

The US doesn't actually agree that Taiwan is part of China. Instead we simply diplomatically note that this is the position of both Taiwan and the Mainland, and insist that any governmental unification be done entirely without any sort of coercion.

Xi is also a step backwards. I don't think he's popular among the Chinese, but they can't get rid of him either.

History is the excuse, not the reason. The reality is Taiwan is strategically positioned, unlike Ireland. If Ireland was between England and the continent (or if Iceland posed a threat to Britain, I guess) it would still be British.

Why does the US still "own" Guantanamo Bay? It's expensive, it's not like it's got US citizens to defend there (unlike, say, The Falklands and Britain), what's served? Strategic position.

Taiwan has also an equal claim to being the government of ALL of China..The Republic Government
became a "Government in Exile" in Taiwan. They didn't go to Taiwan to start a country..They ARE China,
The Republic of China, in their eye, they are the legitimate government, NOT the Communist Chinese Party
in Beijing..When it comes down to it, they didn't completely smash the resistance to Mao..

I have.  How are you supposed to use a product without reading the documentation?

It took me three days to RTFM on all the documentation for my used car, and I almost ran out of beer and gummy bears in the meantime.

True, but China holds a bigger grudge against Taiwan for existing than against Japan for its actions in the Sino-Japanese war.

Yeah it's probably time to change our approach from a One China policy to recognizing Taiwan as an independent country. China is like Nazi Germany - it cannot be appeased and it will run roughshod over human rights of minorities.

Yes, I understand that the US is hardly perfect, but objectively speaking would anyone rather live in China?

There were Snickers and Baby Ruths in the candy bowl at work yesterday.  I did a taste test and Baby Ruth won hands down:  more peanuts, lighter consistency that doesn't overwork your jaw trying to chew it, and similar flavor.

Xi should stick to Bit O' Honey

Ah, social media, every marketers dream for cost effective and potentially viral word of mouth about their products but also a mine field where one wrong step can, well, start an international incident in this case. Ok, maybe it's not quite that big of a deal but it does serve to underscore the potential dangers companies face on social media.

Sorry, working on a marketing degree and felt an uncontrollable urge to drop some knowledge, even though it's actually pretty obvious to everyone regardless of education level, I probably shouldn't have said anything at all, wait did I say that out loud? Is this thing on? Whatever you do don't hit that Add Comment button on the bottom right....
