Does ag work as well as water or fire retardant?

Jesus, I've set off all of one model rocket when I was younger (assignment at a "for fun" science class I took during summer) and even way back then we launched the damned things on the asphalt. How stupid does one have to be to think terrain that's full of small mounds and valleys and covered in a highly flammable material is the best option for something that basically shiats fire when it goes off?

Needs more solid fuel boosters.

/and probably also more struts
//maybe a few extra LFO boosters as well

Who looks at a field of dead grass and thinks "perfect place to set off rockets!"?

Or fireworks, or baby gender exploding things, or whatever.

Right now I'm not even using my propane grill without hosing everything down first, and my yard is still partially green.

When I was a kid we woulda set those fields on fire with a plain old book of matches from the Cozy Inn. Don't need no fancy rocket.

Lets give the grass more guns, because guns make everything safer.

It's possible they set it off in the infield dirt and just didn't anticipate how far the sparks would go.

Good on 'em for taking responsibility, though. I guarantee if my brother & his best friend had started any fires with the countless combustible "experiments" they did with model rocket engines, they would have run like the wind.

2022-08-05 5:18:11 PM
If only there was some cleared sand and dirt area nearby that could have been used to launch from instead.
You know, one that has even been leveled flat.

/I am curious, don't the city summer athletics programs typically use these fields? Were they really using them with the grass that dry?
//Watering your personal lawn that just sits there doing nothing 99% of the time is one thing, but at least this grass has like... a job? I presume there was a lawn watering ban with no exceptions?
///Doesn't excuse the family or anything, just weird to see such a nice equipment on a field that wasn't getting watered regularly.

Everything around the park is green except for the outfield areas.

Did they plant the grass in dirt or in mounds of dessicant packs?

I liked the bit in TFA about damage to the fields. Folks, that grass was DEAD. Burning it might actually improve its chances of regrowth if it ever sees some water.

From the one pic looks like a drop off into kind of a ditch, prob collects little water that falls.

What's odd about all those GIFs you posted is none of that would happen with actual store-bought model rockets. You don't ignite them at the pad. You use an electronic ignition and stand like 15 plus feet away from it. You use a launch pad with a blast shield. Whatever these people did, they really screwed up or they were straight up using fireworks.  Model rocket motors burn for a couple seconds, that's it.

No kidding.  How do you kill that which has no life?

And that dad needs a swift kick in the balls.  Look how crunchy dry the unburned grass is.  What happened to common sense?  Could have burned down some homes doing that on such a dry field.  I hope they make dad pay damages just on general principle.  Maybe not the entire cost of resodding bug enough to sting.

"Definitely not grass you want to be diving for any balls in."

I shouldn't find that so funny, but I do.

I think one of the fields I played baseball on was a kid was all dirt. That wasn't some neighborhood sandlot either, it was where all the teams in the league I as in when I was about 7-10 years old. Is burnt grass really worse than dirt - or grass that was as dry as it was before it was burned?

I don't remember a lot of diving catches either. Some people dove for home plate, but there usually isn't grass around home on any field. I think you're supposed to slide - I wouldn't know. I got to third base once and that was about it.

Besides, kids are resilient.  If they hurt themselves on the hard ground they usually bounce right back up.

Don't be silly.  If it was North Korea they would have hit the ocean.  You can't set the ocean on fire until SCOTUS gets a few more cases to gut the EPA.

About two acres of baseball fields were burned at Pye Brook Park, but the dollar amount of the damage was not immediately known

Unless the fire damaged a structure, the cost is zero. It's grass. It'll grow back, probably healthier.

"due to the size of the fire, the rate at which it was spreading and the extreme heat, firefighters quickly became exhausted and additional crews were called in from Boxford"

A two acre grass fire exhausted the fire crew? They must be used to medical calls and not brush fires. Calls like this regularly get upgraded to 2 alarm just in case in CA since fires spread so quickly and easily. But usually the first crew doesn't bow out due to exhaustion. Was it 100F temp that day or something?

Yes it was close to 100°F, and firefighters still have to wear all their gear even if it's a grass fire.

The ones I launched all had some kind of wadding in them to protect the parachute. I found that wadding floating down back to Earth, on fire, many times. I never started any fires, at least not any that I acknowledge.

This is true. I remember building Estes rockets with that same problem.
