2) Why would your admitting it make a liberal upset? If anything, it validates them.

They need to believe that it makes liberals upset, because that hypothetical state of liberals is the foundation on which conservatives feel that they and fellow conservatives are victims. They posit that we're upset with them, then invent a connection between that supposed state of anger on our part, and our objections to their abjectly shiatty policies, then surmise that we're only against their policies because we hate them... so no matter what the scenario, they can pretend that they're the victim.

When you look at their overtly aggressive positions on things like trans rights, womens rights, civil rights, voting rights, etc., positions where they're actively seeking to disenfranchise people or undermine their rights... conservatives follow this pattern where they attack marginalized groups, posit that liberals are angry at conservatives personally (not just against the positions), follow that up by saying that liberals are only against the policy because they hate conservative people on a personal level (rather than having a rational basis of being against the policy), then if the unpopular policy fails, they say it's just because people hate them personally, or if it succeeds, they argue that it always should have succeeded, and anyone against it is only against it for personal reasons. It's a cheap debate tactic they use to sidestep any criticism of their shiatty policies based on the merits or consequences of the policies themselves.
