You might not have been the target audience.

Yeah, thanks for twisting that knife (cough) Wheel of Time (cough)

You mean Rafe Judkin's The Tire Fire of Time?

I don't know about tire-fire. More like 'hired the first people to show up for casting' and 'only skimmed the book and read what wiki said about the direction of the series'.

Meh the books are YA crap.  Watching fanbois freak out about racial diversity in it has been worth an otherwise mediocre show

You just don't like a thing that several of us like. We can all still get along.

I'd love to say this very thread is likely to contain hints at what some Sandman fans think you might be missing, but this is Fark, so it will probably actually mostly contain memes and pictures of Death cosplayers. And I'm not mad about that either.

Unpopular opinion: The Wheel of Time series is pretty good, except for the last half hour which is truly terrible, but it's fine. Yes, it didn't follow the books perfectly, but what's the point of that? You've already read the books, and Jordan has such word diarrhea that you should already know exactly what everyone looked and sounded like, and exactly how upturned their calves are.

EdgeRunner: And incidentally, Kirby Howell-Baptiste is fantastic in the role of Death. If I was going to nitpick anything, I just wish they'd kept the Eye of Horus makeup. I always liked that as a subtle detail of her look.

Neil someone on Twitter wheee Neil was responding to that question when the trailers came out. Apparently they didn't start drawing her with that makeup until A Season of Mists, so in the Netflix series they didn't add it for The Sound of Her Wings.

As far as I've seen all the stupid drama is centered on Death being played by a black woman.

As for me, I can't wait to watch this weekend.

This makes no sense to me, as Dream appeared in the comic in an African manifestation.  The ethnicities, hell, even the species of the Endless are entirely up to their viewer.

People that are angry on the internet rarely make sense.

This should be a law.  "Where Wolf's Law." No. That sounds like the title for a What We Do in the Shadows spin-off about werewolf law firm specializing in kidnapping and trafficking cases.

mostly I appreciate getting a response from multiple people and none of them telling me I'm a moron because I didn't get it.

My own personal favorite bits are two standalone stories in which Gaiman explains his shtick ("A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Ramadan"), and the episode where a guy who doesn't die goes to a Ren Faire and critiques it, having actually been alive in the Middle Ages. There's so much to love, and there's a lot of material. The angels in charge of Hell is pretty amazing, too.

Kinda dreading the bit with the Diner, since horror's not really my thing, but that's just me. I've heard it's S1 Ep 5 on Netflix.

Ragin' Asian: I haven't followed the buzz thus far.

Predictably, a few stupid people were angry about Sandman "going woke", which caused much laughter

Interesting that Netflix is still dropping series all at once instead of moving back to weekly releases, like everyone else.

The Sandman season has dropped, and that means we'll get a week of think pieces, blog posts, and message board chatter ... then it will fade away, because so many viewers will be on a different schedule from one another, there won't be a shared experience to talk about.

Released weekly, you'd have people talking about Sandman every week. It would be part of the online conversation for over two months as people watch "together," on the same pace, seeing episodes at roughly the same time as one another. It's a communal experience. Chatting about each episode the next day is part of the experience.

Instead, the binge folks and online columnists will watch it all these weekend, there will be a flood of articles and videos, and they'll all move on. Other folks will watch at their own pace, but there won't be a shared "did you see last night's episode?" experience.

I wonder what data Netflix has that keeps them on the "binge" model, because outward appearances, at least, make it seem like weekly episode releases are the way to go, when you consider how long other modern shows stay in "the conversation."

Death being played by a black woman is meaningless (although it's somewhat disappointing we'll miss her iconic look). The real question is can she say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious convincingly.

Gaiman has been effusive in his praise regarding set design, costuming, and casting. He has also been involved in the script adaptation and has not wavered on his approval throughout production. I have allowed myself to be optimistic - the test will be this weekend's highly anticipated binge-watch.

Counterpoint: American Gods and the notion that Good Omens needs a sequel.

American Gods wasn't Gaiman's fault.  The showrunners got into a fight w/the suits over budget & walked.  When they left, so did Gaiman, Gillian Anderson, and Kristen Chenoweth.  Season 2 scripts were tossed and the first few episodes were almost entirely improved or written by Orlando Jones.  Then they fired Jones.
