gnosis301: Arachnophobe: Ragin' Asian: The Sandman fans I've encountered aren't like internet superhero geeks. I hope there isn't stupid drama about a black woman being cast as Lucienne. I haven't followed the buzz thus far.

As far as I've seen all the stupid drama is centered on Death being played by a black woman.

As for me, I can't wait to watch this weekend.

This makes no sense to me, as Dream appeared in the comic in an African manifestation.  The ethnicities, hell, even the species of the Endless are entirely up to their viewer.

Interesting that Netflix is still dropping series all at once instead of moving back to weekly releases, like everyone else.

The Sandman season has dropped, and that means we'll get a week of think pieces, blog posts, and message board chatter ... then it will fade away, because so many viewers will be on a different schedule from one another, there won't be a shared experience to talk about.

Released weekly, you'd have people talking about Sandman every week. It would be part of the online conversation for over two months as people watch "together," on the same pace, seeing episodes at roughly the same time as one another. It's a communal experience. Chatting about each episode the next day is part of the experience.

Instead, the binge folks and online columnists will watch it all these weekend, there will be a flood of articles and videos, and they'll all move on. Other folks will watch at their own pace, but there won't be a shared "did you see last night's episode?" experience.

I wonder what data Netflix has that keeps them on the "binge" model, because outward appearances, at least, make it seem like weekly episode releases are the way to go, when you consider how long other modern shows stay in "the conversation."

Gaiman has been effusive in his praise regarding set design, costuming, and casting. He has also been involved in the script adaptation and has not wavered on his approval throughout production. I have allowed myself to be optimistic - the test will be this weekend's highly anticipated binge-watch.

Counterpoint: American Gods and the notion that Good Omens needs a sequel.

American Gods wasn't Gaiman's fault.  The showrunners got into a fight w/the suits over budget & walked.  When they left, so did Gaiman, Gillian Anderson, and Kristen Chenoweth.  Season 2 scripts were tossed and the first few episodes were almost entirely improved or written by Orlando Jones.  Then they fired Jones.

My own personal favorite bits are two standalone stories in which Gaiman explains his shtick ("A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Ramadan"), and the episode where a guy who doesn't die goes to a Ren Faire and critiques it, having actually been alive in the Middle Ages. There's so much to love, and there's a lot of material. The angels in charge of Hell is pretty amazing, too.

Kinda dreading the bit with the Diner, since horror's not really my thing, but that's just me. I've heard it's S1 Ep 5 on Netflix.

It felt to me like the first volume was an origin story combined with a way to fit the character into the DC universe.  In the later books, Dream's own story starts to unfold, which makes it better, IMO.

Death being played by a black woman is meaningless (although it's somewhat disappointing we'll miss her iconic look). The real question is can she say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious convincingly.

The 1st book is bogged down somewhat by still being tied directly to the DC universe. Once it starts the Doll's House story it becomes its own thing and gets much better.

Just finished bingeing all ten episodes. It's possibly the best adaptation I've seen that sticks close to the source material. On par with The Boys, but that one pretty much threw the comic out after the first episode. I hope Stephen Fry survives to make an appearance in the last season.

It took me five years to pick up the second trade paperback. After that, it coalesces beautifully. The series really needs to be taken as a whole.

Netflix has been hit or miss with adaptations. Let's not speak of Death Note. I haven't heard anything but positive things about Sandman. Liking it so far at 45 minutes in.

Wow. That's keeping with the comic continuity far more aggressively than necessary. But at least it gives hope that her eye whorl and parasol could eventually make an appearance.

Yeah, it's interesting. For some things they are staying crazy close to the comics, but other things are being changed out of necessity.

For example, someone asked how the Spider-Women's long term storyline would work out with an update to a modern setting. He responded that it didn't make sense for one of them to catch HIV from a blood transfusion in 2023 (not to mention she'd be unlikely to die of AIDS in five years' time with modem antiviral treatments), so if they show up again in The Kindly Ones their long-term story will definitely have some tweaks.

Yeah, I know. However these is a lot of content out there. The Good Omens story is done. Why allow a sequel to suck the oxygen out of the room which might otherwise be used on something new. Only Disney seems capable of throwing every idea at the audience (e.g. Eternals 2) know that most will stick.

emtwo: I'm not familiar at all with the comic books, but so far the show is okay. The main character sucks, though. His only facial expression is basically Blue Steel from Zoolander, but dramatic and unironic.

I don't know if that's a fault of casting, acting, directing, or writing. But all he does is make pouty lips and speak in monotone.

This is inherent to the character. It changes with time, and that change is an essential part of his arc, just as his seemingly aloofness early on is also an essential part of the character.

If the show remains true to the comic in future seasons, there will be entire, lengthy arcs where Dream is a secondary character in his own series and rarely appears, so there will be some variety ahead.

While I'm not opposed to a Good Omens 2, what I'd really like first is an expanded edition of Good Omens 1. Aside from Crowley and Aziraphale, all the characters were shortchanged on their presentation and could have used a lot more screentime, particularly Shadwell, Madame Tracy, and Adam and his gang.

I'm not sure anyone's figured out the Netflix algorithm well enough to game it. If the show doesn't get enough viewers, they'll cancel it. But if it becomes a big hit and a fan favorite, they still might cancel it. It seems like it has to hit some kind of magical sweet spot in viewership numbers where it doesn't draw attention to itself as a flop OR a success.

Based on the trailers, they certainly seem to have nailed the visuals.

I'm so ridiculously distracted by his having normal eyes, though.  It's trivial, but still.

So after finally getting a chance to watch the first episode I'm a little disappointed that they changed it so that the events of the Sandman Overture didn't happen in this version of the story, since I'm the comics that is what weakened him enough to get captured.

SuperChuck: I read the first trade of Sandman and I don't get the hype. There was a lot of pseudo-philosophical rambling and it never really went anywhere. What am I missing?

How about a faithful Discworld adaptation instead?

Good Omens is a good book, but they already tapped it and although they left a lot on the cutting room floor. It's over.

But imagine Small Gods, for example, or Monstrous Regiment.  There's a season in either of those.

The BBC has been adapting Sir Terry's Discworld adventures for years with mixed results. I honestly don't have much faith in Netflix or Amazon to do a better job.

The British BBC did pretty good jobs with all of them I reckon. Especially Hogfather.

American BBC gave us The Watch.

Netflix falls somewhere in the middle

Well I'm two episodes in and I'm enjoying it. I've never read the comic.

I even like the animated adaptations, quirky but faithful and fun.
