Why not just use legal alligator, since American alligators are no longer rare and are farmed for hide and meat?

Anything that rare needs to be prefected.

I suggest alligator skin conditioner.

fark those asshole lizards. When they disappear will anyone really mind?

Tell us how, exactly, that would highlight the impact that the illegal wildlife trade is having across the globe?

Gotta hand it to the UK, here.

This is darkest sarcasm.

Rather than the zoo I think he meant the consumers buying legal gator products rather than endangered croc-skin bags.  Consumers who are the wealthy elite, who think laws are meant to be broken by those with 8+ figures in their bank accounts.

Yes, thank you. You can tell I'm a pleb because my mind goes "but I could just get something just as good that doesn't require exploiting something or making the world a worse place!"

Because for well off people..Having something other people can't have without connection shows their power
even above their bank account..

Assholes simply can't be content with never worrying about their needs for their lifetime..They have
to go above and beyond to make sure everyone knows how much better they are by conspicuous
consumption.

The difference between an alligator and a crocodile is one will see you later and one will see you after a while.

But head to its reptile house...and you will find something that looks much too inanimate to be drawing a crowd of zoo visitors to watch it "in action".

I just had a flashback...I remember when they did something similar in Houston.

The telephone caller said he had been worried because he had not seen the Houston Zoo's coral snake move in nine months.

The zookeeper then acknowledged that the sluggish reptile actually was a rubber imitation.

''We have had live snakes in the exhibit, but they don't do well - they tend to die,'' said John Donaho, curator in charge. ''Rather than kill snakes, we put out a rubber one for people to be able to see what they look like.''

Houston Zoo Admits A Snake Was a Fake

I do remember being somewhat disappointed by the snake exhibits as a kid. They mostly just laid around and did nothing. I guess I expected they'd do something cool but that probably only happens when they get fed. The seals and polar bears were much more interesting, but now I wonder if they were just really good animatronic reproductions.

They would have been even more interesting if they shared the same exhibit space though.

The Honolulu zoo used to have an attraction with a real secure looking cage with bars and a big ass sign in front that said something like:

INSIDE THIS CAGE IS THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL ON THE PLANET!

You had to bend down to look through the bars. There was a mirror at the back of the cage.
