Should be fun

He was pissed at Ocon for cutting him up in the race. Maybe that influenced his decision?

/And at least he'll get a nicer car to drive to work in. The Alpine is nice, but an Aston is an Aston.

They've both been getting their elbows out recently, haven't they?

Not going to look for the specific article, but something else I read suggested this has been brewing for a while; AM knew Seb might be leaving, so had been putting tentative feelers out. It's not going to be a snap decision based on one thing in one race.

This seems like such a bad deal on every level.

Alonso is going to a team that isn't going to leap up the rankings next year.  Supposedly Lawrence Stroll is a micromanager, which Alonso famously loves... no wait, that's not right... anyways.  But Vettel seemed happy enough there?  Maybe he's told Alonso that it's fine.  Still doesn't seem like a good step for the veteran.

And Lance is being prevented from being the lead driver in the team literally bought for him, which just makes him look worse than he is.  He doesn't need another 'mentor'.  He doesn't need another ex-World Champion in the other car.  He needs to be given the chance to carry the team and take his lumps or his due, whatever is coming to him.

I guess AM gets to sell more cars in Spain?  Is that a thing?  I don't know.  This deal makes no sense to me.

I think they may want to try winning races, similar to other F1 teams.

Lance has teamed with Massa, Sirotkin, Perez and Vettel and been in 11th-15th for almost his entire run (18th in his final Williams year and 18th currently). He's really not shown himself to be more than this decade's answer to Pedro Diniz.

A middling driver and a random rookie is a recipe for being Williams' tag team Q1-knockout partner.

As far as Alonso, I suspect he just wants to try to stick around and Aston seemed the most feasible seat for him (he wouldn't go to Williams, McLaren wouldn't want him back).

But Alonso isn't really going to change that, is he?  Vettel wasn't able to do it, and he's more team-oriented than Alonso has ever been.  Cheaper too supposedly.

Speaking of Lewis (via the image above), it was announced within the last hour that he's now an investor in the new ownership of the Denver Broncos.

And yes, someone's already made the joke "Bono, my cleats are gone"

Not a good look dude...

Heh.  Heh heh heh.

Well, Alpine certainly wants that, and made an announcement to that end today.

And, if rumors pan out, this is where one Zak Brown enters.

Who's up for Palou v. Ganassi, F1 edition?

Oscar Piastri
@OscarPiastri
I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.

With teams having drivers under long term contracts these days it appears Alpine think they can decide he would be driving for the team next year and wanted a quick announcement so they didn't look bad. But announcing it without even talking to the driver? Not a good look.

This year's motorsports silly season has been nothing short of hilarious.  I'm half-expecting NASCAR's Kaulig Racing to start an F1 team at this point.

Throw in that Alpine had no clue that Alonso was leaving until the Aston Martin press release and apparently, he's now on some Greek island ignoring calls from the Alpine management (per ESPN's F1 reporter)

How about an English football team joking they've signed Piastri

OK, so the rumors are that the deal Piastri had with Alpine is that he would be obligated to take their F1 seat if there was an opening made available prior to July 31, 2022 (even if that seat was for next season). So Alonso might have doubly screwed Alpine over with the timing of his deal.
