Not surprising.  I recall some outrage a few years ago when Target figured out that a young lady was pregnant and sent a targeted mailer that basically outed her pregnancy to her parents.

Here's the article and shiat, it was 10 farking years ago!

It would be cool if we could get enough males and non-pregnant people in general to intentionally do web searches and other stuff in order to sabotage the data. There are probably a lot of stats on demographics which need  to be corupted.

Visa and Mastercard know when you're having an affair. They know your sexuality. They know your medical history.

It's not just the pregnant who need to worry about the power these companies have, it's everybody.

Cash can lead to disappointment. Earlier today I went to Family Dollar and bought some of my favorite water inserts that only they sell for some reason. Anyway, I go to check out and hand the cashier a 20, she looks at it real hard for some reason, like she's calculating something in her head, then she says, "oh okay", and cracks open the register, proceeds to give me $12 change in QUARTERS, cause there was no cash in the register. Been walking around all day with a heavy pocket. I think I'll have to find an arcade or something.

These are PURCHASES. Not browsing history.

Visa et al are selling profiles based on lists of things purchased by your credit card, which, when examined even perfunctorily, can reveal things like gender (women buy more makeup and menstrual products than men do, men buy less therapy), age (older people buy Metamucil and Depends, younger people buy avocado toasts and yeeting devices, middle-agers buy subscriptions to Better Homes and Gardens), and income levels (poor people carry balances for months, rich people buy $10,000 refrigerators).

// Google et al build profiles linked to your IP/MAC addresses based on browsing history, which your guerilla suggestions would work to subvert
// but unless you started swapping your cards with people who fit a very different age/sex/location income level profile, these suggestions won't fool your credit card company

Also, don't use any form of reward card; just as good a tracker as a credit card.  Of course, this means you pay as much as double on some items.

Just thought of a new side hussle:  As a single male, offer to purchase anything even tangently related to pregnancy (for a price of course). To make it work I would have to come up with a list of anything even tangently related to pregnancy and make them understand I have to buy the items (or someone else not connected to her).

I'm single and not dating so they coan't connect me to the person. It should work.

I'm just gonna point out that women who are pregnant and want to be are buying different stuff than women who are pregnant and don't.

Someone who wants a baby is buying baby stuff. Someone who doesn't want a baby probably isn't. Happy pregnant chick is buying prenatal vitamins and maternity wear. Unhappy pregnant chick probably is not buying any of that.

Before anybody goes all "Holy shiat! I'd better start paying cash for everything so Big State doesn't know all my secrets!" Not saying you should be alarmed that your buying info is for sale to the highest bidder (or any bidder, really), but that's something we should ALL be alarmed about. Not just women of childbearing age.

Not sure even "tracking" purchases of "period products" is a problem. Smart people stock up on that shiat. They don't buy the day their period starts, they buy weeks ahead of time or just whenever they're at the store, when they happen to remember "oh, shiat, I'm running low, need to stock up while I'm thinking of it."

And that doesn't even matter to those who don't menstruate because of the form of birth control they might be using.

Just saying, there's not a compelling reason to panic about this any more than you normally would anyway.

VPN and TOR only help hide who you from an outside viewer (like your ISP).

They mean absolutely nothing to hiding the data you provide to directly identify yourself to a site you visit and the persistent cookies and other browser data that generates.

If you're going to have any luck evading this type of surveillance capitalism, you also need to completely clear your browser session every time before you change web pages, and never ever re-use an email, phone number, name, username, account, credit card, or address.

I'd suggest also throwing any smart phones into a lake.

You don't have to like... GIVE your data away, make them work for it. There are web browsers that can help facilitate some of the above, but the idea it's realistically possible that you can participate in the modern world without being surveilled by all of the companies you come in contact with is a farce.

I still use a college roommate's Safeway rewards card, inputing the phone number we had for our shiatty apartment in like 1998. Not for any particular reason besides laziness, although at this point I find it a little amusing.

I use a store reward card.  Also, I don't drink at all, so no alcohol purchases in my routine shopping.  But it seems that just about once a year I get in line behind someone who is buying nothing but alcohol.  A lot of alcohol.  Like, let's give fifty frat boys blood poisoning quantities of booze.  And the purchaser doesn't have a rewards card, can they borrow mine?  My store gives me fuel points, so heck yeah, you can!

I've often wondered what the store's algorithm thinks of these intermittent aberrations.  Does it recognize that I lent my card out, or do I have a profile as some kind of binge drinking lush who falls off the wagon every year or so?

States now have the police power to determine if any pregnant women who has a miscarriage did so under "aborting" circumstances.  How do we determine who was pregnant? Get their purchases. Have they had a baby within the following 9 months?  Well, time to do some investigating.  Was it an abortion? Was it a miscarriage?  Did she do something to cause the miscarriage?  The state must know, to protect the "babies."

Cinedelic: I've often wondered what the store's algorithm thinks of these intermittent aberrations.  Does it recognize that I lent my card out, or do I have a profile as some kind of binge drinking lush who falls off the wagon every year or so?

Store make their money on the data from discount cards primarily the context association.
The most important of which is that can attach your phone number to your credit card number.
They are really only minimally using the data themselves, it's vastly more valuable to sell.

Most messenger apps (Facebook for instance, but basically all of them) will request access to your phone contact list and use that to populate your friends list. If you have even one friend or family member who has your phone number listed with your name attached to it, and they get an app like that, your name attached to your phone number can be assumed to be purchased by a data broker. As a bonus, they also know you have some kind of relationship with the other person.

With that in hand, they can now take credit card purchases they obtained from other sources (not the store you have the card with) and associate them with you.

Assume that any time you give up your credit card number or phone number, that whatever you are doing is linked to your larger data profile and history of everything you've ever done.

In answer to your question now: The alcoholic also is creating the same data points and will have many more data points of using his own credit card. So his card number will likely still be associated with them and not you. Probably the only wrench you've thrown is that the data brokers have down that you have some kind of personal relationship with the lush.
