kdawg7736: Like they can affect the Internet in other countries.

China can barely control their own internet.

2022-07-29 9:20:36 AM
So, a chunk of the world is going to censor their Internet. That's on them, and the folks who are looking to restrict their citizens' access isn't terribly surprising. Can't have those peasants viewing anything to contradicts their governments' statements after all. It's just surprising that so many are willing to go along with China, especially considering how China restricts information about how they treat their Muslim population. But then again, these are countries that are already forming up economic and social ties with China, as opposed to the permissive West. China's not going to dun them about their record on human rights, so why not go with the strict Chinese parents who will keep smut and facts out of the picture? Especially if they can get access to Chinese markets, and visa versa? Given how China wants to expand their influence through Africa, I won't be surprised if these standards spill over there as well.

They've instituted protocol changes that allow them to control the intent in China. They want tech companies to adhere to their standards, with the "Chinese market" as the incentive to do so. Problem is, no one cares and it's made the Chinese market is a standalone anomaly. The point of this effort is to sell 'you can control the internet' to other authoritarian governments. If they get enough buy-in, the Chinese will have an export market for all their spy net infrastructure.

Time to move manufacturing out of China if you are in business there, as it will get a lot harder to do business with them,

"Other Chinese media have indicated that Afghanistan, North Korea, Cambodia, and Syria"

So a coalition of dictators have agreed their citizens shouldn't have freedom. Not exactly shocking, and not much likely to affect the rest of the world. I mean sure, it's something the world needs to keep an eye on, as an increasing isolated bloc of countries working increasingly together with their citizens stuck in the dark is how we get another cold war, but the internet is MUCH harder to censor than traditional media, and while Afghanistan may be able to just shut it down in their borders, China can't as dominance in the modern world economy is their primary goal.

2022-07-29 10:30:14 AM
China, as an organization, is the single greatest abuser of an open internet in the world today.
My clients see more brute force SSH and SNMP hacking attempts from Chinese controlled address space than from anywhere else.

fark China. We should put all their assigned address space into the Bogon and Martian IP address lists so they start getting dropped at ISP peering edges. Russia belongs there too.

Look, if China, North Korea, Syria, Russia and anyone else wants to make their own internet together, that's fine with me.

I'll just use this old existing Internet, whole they enjoy their shiny new one.

It's in no way universal, certainly to home users.

2022-07-29 10:55:03 AM
FTFA: "While information on the new internet body is still trickling out, it doesn't look good for the global internet. Chinese state news agency Xinhua said that the organization's founding members include "institutions, organizations, businesses, and individuals" from nearly 20 countries, which it didn't name, with the head of China's internet censor at the helm. Other Chinese media have indicated that Afghanistan, North Korea, Cambodia, and Syria are among the member countries and claimed that "world-renowned internet leaders, authoritative industry bodies, internet Hall of Fame inductees, and others" have joined as well. If Beijing successfully builds and leverages this coalition, the new organization could threaten global technology standards and the global internet itself."

So it will basically be like Russian military alliances. A bunch of poor countries that do not have the adequate cyber infrastructure to matter, so China bribes them with China's technology.

Love how the say "India might join us too" in their new magic standards body. Reality is that if China really starts to try and screw with the fundamental standards of the internet and tries to start redefining how basic browser standards and protocols work what you will see is India walking away and dropping them like its hot.India's tech economy is so fundamental they won't risk pissing off the majority of the world just to kowtow.

That's just making it slower.  Core routers are expensive on several fronts, but they do get replaced.  End-user and far-edge routers turn over relatively quickly.  IPv4 encapsulation/bridging will be necessary for some time to come, but I think we're nearing a critical mass of IPv6 hardware/firmware rollout.

Any decade now ;)
