Everyone who ever had a facebook account, and will, already has one. Thankfully some websites are not doing that exclusive facebook shiate for logging in that was all the rage 4 years ago.

It's the worst sin a company can commit: market saturation. Not happy being the biggest monster in the block, they can't expand like the blob anymore. Sheer terror and panic.

There's also the problem that VR, while cool and unique, is also very niche.  I love my Index, but it's expensive to run smoothly and detailed enough to have the immersion FaceMeta needs.  Raising the price of a Quest headset now it's it in direct competition with the Xbox/PS5, and that's not where it needs to be.  Nobody likes Zoom, so why will they like Expensive Cartoon Zoom?  But that's the business model, and the only thing that might help is the gov actually cracking down on TikTok for being the espionage system that it is.  Even then, someone else will fill the gap better than Zuck.

The USPS could start a not for profit Facebook with free accounts and actual enforcement of ToS. And not farking sell off every detail of your online life .

TikTok is a front for Chinese intelligence services? Create an ad free national version so the USA intelligence services can enjoy that resource instead!

I had an account. I left when the crap about the "anger/doomscroll" algorithm came out some years ago.

The memories that keep me from ever, ever considering going back? Memories of hanging out, live, in-person, with friends...who were staring at their phones surfing FB. Not just the "quick check", but unable to pull away from scrolling.

I may be boring, but let me know if you have plans before inviting me over.

Counterpoint: saturation isn't the problem. The problem is that a company needs a second act ready and clear guidance around where they are in their business lifecycle.

Zuck never finished college but the people around him did. Many of them have MBAs. They should all have known about this cycle.
The key to maintaining strong overall performance is stacking these life cycles within your business in such a way as to always have a new product/line entering its maturity phase as another area declines. Facebook doesn't seem to have done that successfully.

Few places where it was, and I noped out of them - and left them feedback saying why too.  Within a year or so 2 of the 3 had changed that policy, while the third had gone under (unrelated really, old forums site that was dying anyway.)

You forget that Facebook bought Instagram 10 years ago and WhatsApp & Oculus 8 years ago.

There has really been no new social media type companies for them to purchase.

TikTok took them by complete surprise.

This pivot to the metaverse will be a complete disaster.  They are better off letting a few companies make the attempt and then purchase the most successful one.

Sure, but Facebook also has done a lot of nasty shiat, and is run by a scumbag. So exacerbating the issue you just described are folks like me - I stopped using Facebook many years ago, and refuse to ever return or give them my money.

I'm a prime candidate for an Oculus - I'm an old school gamer from way back, and I want a VR setup really bad but don't want to blow all the cash a Valve Index setup costs. I'd be a prime customer for an Oculus... but they'll never, ever get a single penny of my money because Facebook. Ever.

When you can define web3 as whatever you want, it's hard to be wrong.

For instance, if I claim that web3 is any social site launched in the web3 era, then perhaps someone will dethrone Facebook and it will, by definition, be web3 that did it.

/I'm sure the real explanation will be even more obtuse though

I believe this is a colossal farkup, and I am glad. They are walling themselves off from companies that would use AR/VR and because of FB and their notorious data-harvesting, they will never invest in that technology from that awful company which will pave the way for other companies that can compete at that price point and not be outrageously expensive.

LMAO....Apple make a $300B secret deal with China (and who knows that that entailed) a couple of years ago and (I'm shocked) continues to sling Chinese spyware from its store.  So many people angrily blubbering on their iPhones about what Facebook lets its users do (and it depends on who you ask, some think that Zuckerberg is a liberal, some think that he works for trump, both stupid) while apple directly supports the enemy.

Neither really matters.  Meta was down 1%.  Zuckerberg needs much better messaging, though.

It would have been better than what they have. Second Life has some creativity behind it. Their metaverse was conceived by soulless corporate psychopaths with zero empathy, whimsy or inventiveness. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The only use they could come up with for it was to make corporate Zoom meetings more ponderous and awkward than they already are.
