Screw that!! When it's this hot, I want to stay in the car if possible.

Have you been to the Warrenton Costco for gas? They have 1-2 attendants servicing 6 double-lines of cars. It is absolutely faster to pump your own gas when every driver is serving as their own attendant, vs waiting for 2 guys to get around to 24 cars. When I lived on the coast, we would spend sometimes 30 minutes waiting in line just for a spot at a gas pump. Self service also lets you pump gas more easily during off-peak hours, when attendants aren't working or are on breaks.

Self checkout is faster too, but people always point out how it's a scam to save the companies money, (it is both.)  I'm just asking people to be consistent on self serve gas which is the same.

I self-checkout for a few reasons. I can go slow enough to make sure each price is correct. And fragile items like chips or bread don't get crushed when tossed in the bag.

Self-service is fine if you are dealing with simply defined products: diesel by the gallon, groceries with barcodes, one or two items at the hardware store. But, fresh fruits and vegetables, or items that are heavy or bulky and there's no handheld barcode reader, nope.  But until Lowe's can program my veterans discount into self-service, I'll wait in line.

Been in Oregon 18 years and not being able to pump my own fuel still bugs me. The heatwave will be over before either of our vehicles needs refueling.

I still can't figure out why this really bothers anyone.

Of course, if that means more work for someone and less pay, yeah that makes sense.

Otherwise, they've got people to pump your gas for you. Whoopty f*cking doo.

How about letting the market work it out instead of the state mandating it.

it is hot as balls here. was over 100 degrees for the last few days, over 100 today and will be for the next few. people have died. I think the powers that be are more worried about gas station workers keeling over from heat stroke.
the problem is that people from Oregon literally don't know how to use a gas pump.
except motorcycle people who can always pump their own gas because having someone put their hands in your lap to fill the tank is awkward for both parties.

I prefer it for the simplicity of putting shiat away. "These bags go in the kitchen, these to the back fridge, these to my room". Takes 5 minutes to put away $150 in groceries/toiletries/cleaning supplies vs 20 minutes when a cashier just tosses unrelated crap into assorted bags. Or longer, if the gallon jar of pickles pops the top on the Dawn/handsoap/body wash & it leaks everywhere.

It annoys people because it takes a lot longer to get gas. In small towns they have only one employee at the stations. In larger populations they have 2 people and they can only service one car at a time.

Whenever the topic comes up, half the people here feel the need to point out that it's just a way to make the customer do work so they can employ fewer people.  Self serve gas is the same thing.

when the wind on the oregon coast was blowing the local radio signal all the way to north dakota and the rain was a sideways torrent, i was always glad to hand the attendant the card and let him stand outside in full foul weather gear and pump my gas for me...

As someone who worked as a gas station attendant as a teen on their second job in life, I'm getting a kick...

A full service station, back when "self-serve" was just becoming a thing.  Which meant, probably 50-60% of self-servers always needed help.

But full-service meant full-service.  You washed their windows, front and back.  You checked the oil.  You checked the air in their tires.  If the driver was a nice looking female, alone, you recommended changing the winter air in their tires to summer air (free of course).  After which, you loosened the valve stems on the tires, waited the time for all the air to escape, 4-5 minutes, during which, you chatted up said babe, and then refilled the air in all the tires.

When I got my license at 15 (long time ago) my parents sent me to put gas in the van. For whatever reason, the green handle caught my eye so I started pumping. Luckily the dude next to me quickly said "I don't think that thing takes diesel" and I was able to dilute it enough with regular gas that nothing blew up.  But definitely learned my lesson.

When I was pumping gas at a limo/bus company and washing the vehicles, I accidentally put diesel into the blue fluid diesel exhaust environmental system.

Might have been a three or four tablespoons before I realized. I was currently on probation and this was a court assigned job and if I got fired from the job I would go to jail. The lead mechanic screamed at me for about 10 minutes.

3 weeks later a bill came back from the dealership to clean/replace whatever they needed to do. It cost $8,000. They didn't make me pay it. They didn't fire me.

Ditto.  I worked a self-service only gas station the summer between high school and college in the late 70s.  Self service wasn't brand new, but it was new enough that a lot of people had difficulty figuring it out.  We weren't supposed to help people, but if it was a lone elderly woman, I would break the rules and help her out if I could step away from the register.

The local Chevron in Murrayhill has been letting me pump my own gas for years. Also recently, they keep shutting pumps down because they don't have enough attendants.

Not being able to pump your own gas in Oregon is stupid.

I read an article a while back, perhaps here, that was full of Oregonians expressing concerns over self-serve gas.  The author referred to it as "learned helplessness" and I'm waiting still to use that phrase somewhere.

Keep cool, it's hot!

You push the produce button (or whatever the category is).
You push the first letter of the item (example: t for tomatoes)
You push the item (example: plum tomatoes)
You let the thing weigh the item.

It's pretty damn simple.
But if you think that's too complicated, then you must not be able to use the internet or your phone or any modern electronics either.
That's why they still have the checkout people for the olds.

I know someone whose son did this. The nozzle didn't fit, of course, so he nursed the fuel into the tank bit by bit for 30 minutes.

The fix was a few $k...

Diesel nozzles are larger than gasoline nozzles and would not have fit.
