According to the article, something went wrong on step 6 of a 7 step, multi-week upgrade process. They deleted a routing rule that ended up causing a cascading failure due to an overload. I don't feel like we need the tinfoil hats yet. But we can certainly tell them they farked up and they need to do better.

Stephen_Falken: Yes they sure as hell CAN cloud host anything they want. Maybe Rogers has become an internet service reseller. Also, it's entirely possible that they're using SaaS to provide their VPN services, in which case it would not be a hardware problem, but one introduced by whatever content delivery network was being used to provide said service.


Rogers is an ISP, not a reseller. They certainly cannot cloud host the physical networking equipment that runs their network.

You can't just cloud host infinitely - somewhere physical hardware has to actually exist. Rogers owns that hardware.

This was basically the equivalent of AWS breaking.

I hope Interac gets a back-up carrier.

Losing my phone was one thing. Losing my ability to pay for stuff is another thing entirely.

Usually used in building lingo, to differentiate restoration of a house from Restoration Era architectural style. I've never heard/seen it used in a non-renovation context before (but I don't restore furniture/books/art/paint/whatever).

Yah that part of the outage sucked the most, at least the vendors in the mall I frequent for lunches had an equal spread of bell backed vs rogers backed transaction machines.  The ones backed by rogers did not get much business let me tell you.

Meanwhile the Luddite cash-only types were rejoicing that all their dug-in heels paid off for that one moment in time where my cashless self was forced to buy lunch from an indian food place because the shawarma placed used rogers for its interac machines.
