I live in SF. I see the results of what the Breed administration is doing. There are cleaner streets. There are homeless people moved into housing. Crime isn't, and haven't been, a big problem: I can walk almost any part of SF at any hour of the day or night and not feel threatened. And I'm not packing either.

She has a fight with the progressives on getting navigation centers up and running for the homeless. Effectively, about 7 or 8 of the 11 supervisors are against her. Some waver and some are slowly moving to her side. But there are knuckleheads like Aaron Peskin who is the Mitch McConnell of San Francisco. He's a wise-ass: he noes everything.

The only thing I need right now in San Francisco is a warmer blanket. It's freezing here!

I'd move to the northernmost LA suburb in a heartbeat; best town in this country save one. But La Colombiana, for reasons I have yet to tease out, just loathes it there. There is little talk more satisfying to the brunch crowd than "we're gonna crack some homeless drug addict skulls!" The violence of police action on those least able to defend themselves is cathartic for those who love to show off how much they were able to write off in charitable contributions.

I would argue that the "moderate" or "centrist" position fails not because it is incrementalist but because it only pretends to be. It is forever  surrendering to right wing proposals while never preserving the progress that left wing policies have made.

It is a stark illustration of my previous point, in which a centrist adopts a right wing talking point to justify police violence. & for those of you thinking "police violence?? WTF??" what exactly do you think happens when cops roust the homeless, destroy their camps & bulldoze their possessions? What do you think cops do to drug addicts in custody? To just about everyone in custody?

Breed's decision to go Tough On Crime™ is one of the oldest Dem mistakes in politics. I mean, sure, it wins some elections, but at the end of the day, all a TOC Dem is doing is trying to hold a line instead of gain ground, & that's ultimately over the long term a losing strategy. It promotes no change & accepts that the right wing prison-industrial complex is the only way to go.

Some will come away from the biographical sections of their piece & think Breed's experience taught her lessons about what the ppl really want, but what I see is someone who's learned to exploit what the ppl say they want while avoiding the work of giving them what they actually need.

1) No one ever talks to the poor or the homeless about what they need. We only ever listen to property owners, because they donate and can vote. It's obscene.

2) Centrist and moderate approaches to homelessness and poverty do not work and they've never worked. But they make rich donors happy.

Gee, I'm sensing a pattern emerging.

No, it has more to do with the US being a geographically large, and ethnically diverse country vs a small, Nordic, homogeneous country line Finland. What might world in Oakland probs won't work in Miami, which in turn probably won't work in Portland, ME.

it's san Francisco - homelessness can't be monetized through micro transactions or creating a data mine so nothing is going to be done about it.  it's a beautiful city inhabited by horrible people.

Breed is a useless, arrogant, defensive and hypocritical politician whose stupid policies have helped turn San Francisco into the shiathole it's become.

She defunded the police to the tune of $120 million before doing an about-face 18 months later. Homicides and property crimes are skyrocketing amid her calls for everyone to be "less tolerant of the bullshiat that has destroyed our city".

It's a wonder how she got her job and I'm surprised San Franciscans haven't given her the boot yet like they did with Chesa Boudin

Heaven forfend that Democrats ever win elections!  Just like the Dem-Soc/Greens/Naderites/Communists/etc. parties, we should always be too pure to actually appeal to the public! Let's build a platform on appeasing thugs and drug gangs. That way, we'd be able to celebrate Republican win after Republican win, the way kook-lefties always do.

Or maybe, I've got an idea. You know how we could really get you guys on board? Give every rapist and murderer a billion dollars! (To have, not spend.) Then they'd be "billionaires", and progressive clowns would suddenly see them not at victims but as the criminals they are!  We might have to like, hold you back from trying to kill them all with guillotines, since that's what you always advice we do with anyone who is even modestly successful, but at least you might see why mainstream Democrats think that coddling crooks - many of whom are really more victimizers then victims - goes too far.

Between that 2-parter, and Homefront - Paradise Lost predicting the panicky erosion of rights by the military / government in response to a threat years before 9-11, the writers really nailed the story at times.
