I'm just in one small tourist town in Spain, so not really representative, but when Spain opened up to USians without proof of vaccination at the beginning of July, the locals here brought the masks back out. We don't really know what's news and what is clickbait, but between antivaxxers and the reports about overrun hospitals, we're keeping some social distance (from the people, if not their money...).

Spain has always overdone the mask thing. They required masks in outdoor stadiums still this spring.

Not so CSB
The firm I work at in downtown LA was REALLY big on their overly-complex "RTO" (Return To Office) plan earlier this year. May come in 1 day a week! June come in 2 days a week! The words "team!" and "collaboration!" were thrown around a lot. God how managers love that vapid, nearly-meaningless word.

I showed up twice I think, and haven't been back since.
And there hasn't been a single word regarding RTO in months.

I'm ok with any mandates.  I get kind of creeped out seeing so many with masks in stores and walking around.

Depends on what the Governor decides.

SpocksEars: The words "team!" and "collaboration!"

Yep, similar phrases have been tossed around in our RTO info meetings.  I'd like to just respond by saying, "how about you shadow me for a day and then you'll realize how much bullshiat you're spewing?"  But they know it already, just trying to justify filling up the empty office space they're paying for.

There are instances where in-person interaction is better, but I estimate that is less than 5% of of my work.

I never stopped. Plus, I like the thought that I might be triggering certain snowflakes by continuing to wear a mask.

Confirms my belief that most laws and regulations are because there is a small percentage who are plain assholes or too stupid to behave like a normal human being and have to be told what to do like an 8 year old child.  Same sort of people who would pee in the water supply if there wasn't a law making that illegal.

I'm in Los Angeles, and have never stopped wearing a mask in public.  It seems to vary a lot from store to store.  In some stores maybe 50% are wearing a mask; in others less than 10%.  I stopped in a market in Oakland last month and every single person was wearing a mask.  I haven't figured out if the differences are caused  by the demographics of the shoppers, the local customs, or what.

I'm in LA and haven't stopped wearing mine, both at work and in the stores.  I hope they make them mandatory again, I know too many folks who've gotten sick recently with it.

We're in DC and never stopped wearing them either.  A month ago, most people weren't masking, but over the past couple of weeks I've seen a sharp uptick in mask wearing, thank goodness.

Seems people have heard about BA.5 and are taking it seriously, at least around here.

LA County already has a mask mandate for public transit, which was implemented right after the federal one was struck down several months ago by that Floriduh judge. If this means I have to keep the mask on after I get off the bus to check mail at the office, that's fine with me.

With these new variants at R16, I'm just waiting for that one lucky mutation to push us over the edge into Black Death territory.  Remember, there's nothing saying these strains have to become easier and endemic, it very easily could go the other way.

It be a sight to behold should you make it through that.  I don't think we'd be worrying about inflation anymore.

Smog stopped being a thing in LA about 2005.

You might not have alerts, but you don't have a clean bill of health from the American Lung Association either.

Objection, your honor. The topic under discussion was "smog", not "ozone".
And yes, I remember well the "Stage X" alerts in LA in the 70s - the air is HEAVENLY now compared to then - despite ozone, beer farts, and stoner fog.

Also from the American Lung Association:

Ozone (also called smog) is one of the most dangerous and widespread pollutants in the U.S.
