"In his absence, he has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president."

Does it ever go well for the acting president (who was part of the administration of the fleeing dictator) in these situations?  Have any avoided death, prison or exile?

Sure, you could and should call the opposition and start negotiating a peaceful transition of power, but why would the opposition trust you?  And why negotiate once the dictator has fled?

Of all the jobs in the world, Acting President after the dictator has fled with the loot has to be one of the absolute worst.

Eh.  That was more the narrative when this all kicked off , and somewhat leading up to it.

Now that things didn't shake out the way those pundits predicted, they have shifted gears to "why you shouldn't blame this on organic farming."

But a quick google for Sri Lanka Organic Farming is chock-a-block with headlines linking the political and social unrest there with organic farming.

And it was really damned stupid at the time.

Yeah the "organic farming" was actually: We don't have any money to buy fertilizers for our crops, so how do we sugarcoat this to the international community?  And then their crops failed, spectacularly.

Bank accounts can be frozen. Taking a page from the US military, I'm a big fan of loading literal pallet loads of shrink wrapped $100 bills on to a cargo plane.

Sri Lanka, long self-sufficient in rice production, has been forced to import $450 million worth of rice even as domestic prices for this staple of the national diet surged by around 50 percent. The ban also devastated the nation's tea crop, its primary export and source of foreign exchange.

May Dall-E never get old.

Anyway, you know you're in the worst timeline when this quote:

The leader, who enjoys immunity from prosecution while he is president, is believed to have wanted to flee abroad before stepping down to avoid the possibility of arrest by the new administration.

Seems as likely to occur in the US as much as any "banana republic" or any " -'stan".

Food is always the last thing a govt. loses control of because when people get hangry they riot. Rice production only dropped ~14%, and rice wasn't the only thing to increase in price that much, it was across the board - they've had runaway inflation for a while now. Plus they've had lower yields before switching to organic in the last few years, but they were able to make up the difference with imports ands keep prices down.

Like the Boobies said it was mismanagement and kleptocracy that caused the economic crisis that led to people going hungry, not organic farming that caused the country to collapse. If a car goes off the road and hits a tree, you don't say the tree caused the crash, even though hitting it caused the damage to the car - you look for what made the car go off the road in the first place.

The organic farming thing didn't help - imposing it on a national scale was idiotic - but the reason it had the impact it did was because the country's finances were already destroyed by a string of bad decisions over the last 15 years.

I know all the Sri Lankan polisci experts are on Twitter, but I'm curious how we got to the conclusion that "Sri Lanka is a military dictatorship". Wikipedia says they're a parliamentary democracy, and that their elections are competitive. Freedom House gives them a score of 55, higher (freer) than democracies like Malaysia and Bangladesh. It's not great but also a bit of a stretch to call it a "dictatorship".

Oh and the president who just resigned has only been president for 3 years, not 20 (his brother was brother for about 10 years earlier).

Where have you heard that?  It certainly had some crazy governments in the 70s and 80s, and Junius Jayawardene ruled by decree for a while, but I think it was always run by civilians.
I think it's Myanmar that's never had civilian rule.

I was expressing wonder about subby's description of the Rajapaksa presidency in the headline. I guess I conflated their description of "fleeing on a military jet" and "dictatorship" though.
