He probably hates it because of the admission fee, which it too much like capitalism.

I lived on that island for 16 years.  So beautiful in the summer.  My house was just three blocks from the water.

Or for kids (and adults) who preferred to be closer to the water and the mountains.  An old boyfriend chose to go there because he liked to kayak the Nooksack (before it was cool), he liked to fly fish (before it was cool), and he liked to ski Mt. Baker, a woefully underutilized mountain for skiing (again, before it was the cool thing to do).

I'd choose it and Bellingham over the very urban Husky dawghouse anyday.

I have 2 cousins who went there for that very reason. And one still very bitter cousin after 25 years who went to WSU because he couldn't get into UW. This comment gives me a sensible chuckle.

Full disclosure:

My Mom went to WWU and transferred to CWU.  My younger brother went to WWU, and my Mom hated it when I teased him about that.

It's a lovely island and it would be completely overrun with people if most of it wasn't too rocky to allow for a septic system that doesn't need to be pumped out periodically. There are lots of little niche touristy things to do that don't draw a huge crowd that you can still enjoy the island if the state parks are all overrun. Then again, not everyone wants to go geocaching in the middle of a rhododendron preserve.

That, too.

CSS:  Used to go to Vancouver quite often when I lived on Fidalgo Island at Dewey, very near Deception Pass Bridge.   Anyway, coming back the US Customs guy asks me if I was bringing back any 222s.  I said "Oh, you mean Canadian aspirin? ".  He laughed out loud at that and waved me on.

BuckTurgidson: Having experienced Disneyland this sounds much better.

I wanted to take my kids to Disney this year.  But when I tried to reserve, they said you had to stay on property if you were out of state or they wouldn't sell you tickets.  And the light parade thing was moved to California.

So ... I didn't.
Why do you gotta be like that on your 50th anniversary of the light parade?

You just cancel it?  50th anniversary of light parade and the park.
And you go splitting them up and shiatting all over it.

Fark you Disney.  I'll go to dick-chop island instead.
