On top of the dough goes a layer of tomato sauce, then a slice of deli-style salami, then a sliced green bell pepper ring, and finally the topper (and most controversial ingredient) - a slice of processed yellow American cheese!

I was born in PA, in Somerset County.  I went to PSU and often drove through Altoona.  There were a lot of places along there where I often stopped for pizza that had really good pies.

Back in the day, there was Pappy's, and there were a lot of little Mom & Pop shops like Hi-Way pizza that were great places to break the trip and get something good to eat.

I would hate to think that those kind of places are being run out in favor of this "Altoona Style".  This stuff looks like shiat.

I'd sooner call Chicago's dough pie a pizza than this garbage.

That's Middle School Cafeteria Pizza, which by law must be served by a lunch lady with an enormous beehive hairdo barely contained in a hair net, sporting a large mole WITH A THREE INCH HAIR GROWING OUT OF IT, and who speaks in a gravelly four pack a day smoker voice.

Breaded "Doh!" balls. Yeah, no...I agree!

While generally the best pizza is the one you're eating right now, I think I'd skip a meal if that was the only option.

This seems like it was invented in a contest to come up with the worst thing that might be able to be called pizza.
I was trying to come up with a worse thing to use as the dough. Wonder bread is about the low point.

They could stand to ruin the sauce more. That might be salvageable.

You people have no idea the depravity of people in Central Pennsylvania.

My guess would be either the hotel that created it ran out of mozzarella and improvised this and it stuck, or someone made this in an attempt to improve pizza, and (here's the kicker) they do think it's better.  Or, at least, comparable to other, real kinds of pizza.

Honestly it doesn't look too bad to me, but in a cheap, bachelor, throw-some-random-stuff-together-and-enjoy-it-as-a-guilty-pleasure way, not as something good in an absolute sense.

Hard to say what's more wrong. What most "foodies" think has to be food. Or what most Americans think is food.

The best style of pizza originated in CT... but is NOT New Haven style.

The best?  Greek Style, invented in New London, CT in 1955.

Unfortunately, the originating restaurant no longer exists.  If you want to have the absolute best example of Greek pizza, you need to travel to Village Pizza in Easthampton, MA.  It's unbrominated flour crust has that perfect bit of crunch on the bottom; breaking through that you come to an airy delight the consistency of warm focaccia that literally melts on your tongue.  Greek pizzas are typically topped with a mix of mozzarella and white cheddar (with occasionally a smattering of provolone) and abundant toppings.

The key to truly enjoying Greek pizza is that you need to have it fresh and hot.  The experience is just not the same when you have it cold or even reheated.

I'm convinced this started as a joke.  Cooks were playing a prank by trying to make a pizza worse than Chicago-style.  But it somehow caught on.

And even cafeteria pizza had something that at least pretended to be mozzarella

A salami and green pepper pizza wouldn't be bad, and cheeses are surprisingly interchangeable.

Here's something fun; take any jelly, any cheese, and any bread you have in your house and make a grilled cheese sandwich - it  always works.

They have 1/3 pound hamburgers w/ bacon as an appetizer too. Just a little something to start you off before your Altoona pizza.

Meh, I'm pretty sure I've made similar things at 3am drunk. A slice of bread, some spaghetti sauce, a piece of boloney and a slice of cheese? Hell yeah! They just elevated it with the focaccia, salami and green pepper.

But it also looks like this is a novelty for their shop, as it's set aside on the menu. They didn't mention it.. or I didn't get that far... but it looks like the rest of the 'za is good old-fashioned all-American pizza. Because, if it's not, then the white pie will really make you ralph.
