(NPR)   How did a collection of mostly Catholic, third world, banana republics manage to legalize abortion, and can the U.S. duplicate this feat? Of course, most of those countries also have universal healthcare.... so, maybe we're the third world?   (npr.org) divider line

They don't have a farking US Senate or Electoral College built into their constitutions, with no realistic way to reform them.  (The popular vote state compact thing, is never going to happen.)

Because their government hasn't been hijacked by Christian fundamentalists.

American "Catholics" are mostly not real Catholics, they have just hijacked the name and abandoned the principles.
American "Christians" are mostly not real Christians, they have just hijacked the name and abandoned the principles.
American "Police" are mostly not real Police, they have just hijacked the name and abandoned the principles.
Hell, even American "Republicans" are not real Republicans, they have just hijacked the name and abandoned the principles.

Not sure, but I may be seeing a pattern.

They suffered under the rule of weird gross catholics so they know the score. We're going to find out.

I also have bad news for some of our zanier christian sects, when the weird gross catholics on the court reference "the church", they are not talking about yours.

This is all about political power through the merging of the US evangelical rubes and the fossil fuel industry to create the shiattiest future possible.

What happened around 2008 to start the downfall of US life expectancy? Is that the year x removed y from their menu???

Where Y is an awesome blossom...

In Ireland, the much-publicized death of Savita Halappanavar helped fuel opposition to the abortion bans.

In Poland, the much-publicized death of a woman known only as Agnieszka T has helped fuel opposition to abortion bans.

In the US, we're debating whether or not 10 year olds should be forced to carry fetuses to term.

You know what might bring America around to more European type Democratic Socialism?  Maybe have a few reality shows following ex-pats in different European countries, and how their life is more about living and less a bout chasing money.  Maybe it would break their love of capitalism

As bad as they are, Catholics aren't the current Christofascist cultists in America. It's all Baptists and Protestants and other weirdo Christian cultists. Start banning or taxing churches that take political stances and you'll see things change.

Perhaps the US should become a socialist country, since there's less of a chance the US will overthrow their government and replace it with a puppet dictator like what happens in South and Central America.

America the beautiful
America the great
America the not half bad
America: Better than those starving kids in China
America: At least we're not Mexico
America: Move to Argentina already if you think it's so bad here, commie scum

Time for a new slogan.

Women are kidnapped or killed with no investigation in those countries. The women are abused, the men are abusive, knock up the women and then leave them.  You want to duplicate them in order to have legal abortion, Subby? How about no? Let's do better.

Well, they had those things in the 1800s, and then they had revolutions in the 1900s to get rid of them because, to your point, they had no way to reform them. A lot of bloodshed and instability later, they managed to make one decision that we like.

Not sure that's the path I would want to emulate.

One of my wife's best friends is an Egyptian raised in the US who became a typical America-hating Progressive and did what so may threaten and left in his 40's. He stayed 10 years living abroad, met his husband and then moved back to the US and became a Trump supporting Conservative. He recently stayed with us for a few days and told me it took him leaving the US to realize that even with our issues it's still a hell of a lot better than the rest of the world.

Ho about we disband the CIA and use the money they would get to fund programs to make women safer in South America.  After all it is because of the CIA that South and Central America is the way they are today.

There are a good number of countries that are objectively better than America in every measurable metric. Your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate's experience in Egypt does not disprove the facts that our prison population, recidivism rates, healthcare costs and outcomes, press freedom, general happiness and income inequality, just for starters, are absolutely atrocious in comparison to other countries with policies Republicans claim are 'socialist'.

My favorite part of your anecdote is you don't explicitly state where your Egyptian acquaintance stayed abroad for 10 years after he initially left the U.S.

There's a lot of missing context and nuance there. Staying in Egypt (for example) or Liberia is going to be a much more different experience from staying in let's say... Denmark or Norway.
