Chop them up and feed them to the dogs.

I wanted Brats for the 4th, couldn't find any, bought a ton of hot dogs, nobody ate any, so the dogs got lucky.  (Yes, I know I shouldn't be left to roam a supermarket alone.)

You used the hot dog cart method. Stop pretending it's some special technique by calling it sous vide.

We had one of those way back.  I think it was a boardwalk prize down the shore.

I just steamed a couple last night.  That seems about as good as anything.  It's a f*ckin' hotdog, FFS.

By the looks of every single hotdog picture in that article, no matter the cooking method, I can dismiss this guy's advice outright. I'm guessing fresh out of high school and only has microwave ramen noodle experience.

I don't know why, but I really like all of the Oscar Mayer ads out now.  They're so stupid and nonsensical that they work, IMO.

On a grill is great.

I'll also use the toaster oven. 375 for about 8 minutes seems to work well.

Steamed is also acceptable. Bonus there, you can put the buns on top and steam them as well.

I meant to have one when I was in NYC a couple weeks ago, but I never saw anyone selling just hotdogs. They were all those guys that sell 10,000 other items off their tiny cart.

Where are all the simple hotdog vendors?

I'll sear them in a pot to get some char marks on them. Then simmer with 'really cheap beer' (like a pabst) cover about 1/2 inch and simmer on low a couple of hours. Check often to make sure you don't boil dry.

I've sung this products praises before in the food tab.  The hamilton beach indoor searing grill is amazing (its cold as balls here 6 months out of the year and i ain't going outdoors november to april!) and versatile.   Does hot dogs as great as over the open flame.

Removable and submersible cooking surface, easy to clean.  is not a "press" like a foreman, so no smooshing your food.

I would replace it with a new one the same day if it were to die.

This is the right answer - except I do it the other way around - boil in beer then broil

Boil em to bring the temp up, then empty the water, butter or oil in the pan over medium slight medium/high to get the casing crisp

Grilled of course is preferred, but I'm an apartment dweller and can't be trusted with a grill lest I burn the entire complex down with 30ml of propane

They don't seem to exist anymore.  I guess you can't sustain a street cart like that on just one menu item, or else overall demand for hot dogs dropped in the face of other alternatives (e.g., here).  The hot dogs they sell are the same as they've ever been from a generic cart in NYC, AFAICT.

I still see the hot dog guys at Lowes and home Depot, but they also have polish dogs, Italian sausage, grilled peppers and onions etc, so not JUST dogs, but the hot dog vendor isn't completely a goner

Way too much time and effort in some of the cooking methods mentioned here.  For sausages, brats, and other better quality encased meats go ahead.  But hot dogs shouldn't require more than 5 minutes from fridge to bun no matter the cooking method.

2022-07-07 12:00:34 PM
I typically cook dogs the same way I fry bologna, with a little butter in a skillet.

2022-07-07 12:02:22 PM
What a shock, the dog that was number one is about the only one that was not over cooked.

2022-07-07 12:45:11 PM
Someone said it upthread already, but i take a bun, put good mustard in it, a little (gasp!) mayo on it, put the dog in, and nuke it for 38 seconds. Total elapsed time maybe 3 minutes. Everyday eating works that way. Save the fancy prep for a barbecue or other gathering where you can show off...

2022-07-07 12:58:13 PM
Depends on the hotdog. I'll boil Vienna in beer(cuts some salt while adding beer flavor) then grill them(intensify  all that flavor). Don't really care how I cook the cheap ones. Who waits a hour to sous vide a hot dog? Throw it in your air fryer and be done.

I did one in a microwave for the impatient granddaughter. Once. 30 seconds. The cleanup took 20 minutes. Getting the baloney out of the ventilation grates in the top was a PITA.

Agreed. Nuke 'em and wrap 'em in a flour tortilla.

So I just realized that I have hot dogs but no buns. I do have a bunch of tortillas though, so I thought what if I use those to wrap up the dogs and then deep fry them. A quick internet search told me this is a thing and now I must try it.

If you're looking for the optimum cooked sausage, it's sweet Italian on a charcoal grill. Dust the sausage with some Montreal Spice mix as it's grilling. Add a good brown mustard like Gulden's at the table. If you can't get a good Italian sausage, try Nathan's.

I use Kenji's approach:  on a grill, simmer the sausage in apple cider vinegar along with sliced onions and peppers until cooked, then finish the sausages on the grill.  He has similar results recipes for other types of sausages.  They are all good

kenji's a food genius, but why would you use cider vinegar (diluted, i assume?) instead of beer in that method?

He uses beer for the brats version.  The Italian sausage version has some sugar added to the vinegar.  It all plays very well together.
