That would be all cat "owners".

I suspect the researchers have some leftover grant money they need to spend.

The team is looking to obtain about 2,500 survey responses in total, with an eye on having something to show to the public within the next 12 to 18 months.

Only 2500? They should aim a lot higher. They could set the world record for research participation.

We inherited a cat when the girlfriends grandma died. Now said cat has decided that I'm a good enough replacement.
I didn't want another cat dammit!

You have no say in the matter. The cat has spoken. When a cat chooses you, you have no choice but to go buy some kitty litter and Meow Mix.

Also FTA: "In short: a well-socialized kitten becomes a well-adjusted adult, and we'd like to do whatever we can to ensure the creation of more well-socialized kittens. We hope that our study will be a good first step in that process," Link said.

The kitten just needs an older cat to be its mentor.

"The study will survey owners about their pet's behaviors and their knowledge of training methods."

My cats don't seem to have any training methods other than "I yowl, hooman getz me fud / water / toyz / cleanz my litter box". I don't think it's rocket science.   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cats just tolerate you! But everything has its limits...
