So will it end in chaos and fighting in the streets?

Or

Will people just ignore their current elected officials and come together in smaller
community groups to solve their most pressing needs calmly?

It will be interesting to observe.

Well, they did abstain from the vote condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and have been begging Putin for cheap fuel so...maybe ?

Sri Lanka seems to be a beautiful place and as has already been noted the people seem lovely too. I work with a few Sri Lankans and they're great. Aussies have a strong relationship with Sri Lanka because we're both nations of cricket fans (the second test of the current series starts in Galle in less than 24 hours, there were some doubts whether the tour would proceed given the anti-government protests etc but it does bring some income into the country when a pile of cricketers, team assistants and journalists all turn up, and the Sri Lankan crowds watching the cricket seem very appreciative it's happening).

Rebuilding the tourism industry unfortunately won't happen overnight in this pandemic and it's not easy to see how their economy will adjust to this downturn. In places like the US the reduction in international tourism in places like Florida or Hawaii can be somewhat made up for with increased domestic tourism as people stay within the US for their vacations rather than travel to Europe or wherever. In places like Sri Lanka or Bali the impact is much bigger.

Neither.  They'll be bought by a bigger nation like a troubled Mom & Pop business and made into a Protectorate of some sort.

Hey, countries full of workers are valuable.  Somebody's gonna swoop in and take advantage, mark my words.  Even if it's only the IMF saddling them with debt for the next 300 years.

It's an island nation that can't pay it's own civil servants (wants them farming on the weekend old school Maoist Chinese style), has a broken infrastructure, and can't afford to import basic essentials to keep the economy running.  There is no bordering country that will help them out (India won't lift a finger nationally because of the Tamil issue, but may give aid to that minority).

Maybe... security services can keep the place in order for a short while until relief shipments come from somewhere.  However, the police/military will only stay in line so long as they *and* their families are watered, fed, and paid (in about that order).  At best, a governmental shakeup/uprising, next is a military coup securing resources for it's members while keeping the plebs in check, worst is a combination governmental/societal breakdown where things go New Orleans right after Katrina or full on Somali warlord.

There is no good ending to this one.  Welcome to the dystopia that the cyberpunk authors were writing about.  It won't be the last either.

In related news, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund have both ruled that, in the future, a nation cannot go bankrupt without the official slide whistle sound.  Experts say that this will alert international investors to simultaneously make the legally-required "aaawww..." sound.

India has given about 4 billion USD in food and fuel aid, most of which has been spent.

Their president embezzled billions, and then appointed a bunch of his family members to office and they also embezzled billions. He switched the country to "green" overnight and destroyed the farming industry. He sold the rights to their main port to China for 99 years. It's not going to end well for Sri Lanka.

Pro Tip: Don't consider going to Sri Lanka on vacation for the next decade.

crumblecat: Beautiful country and lovely people.

Some very nice and polite family acquaintances invited my wife and me to go and visit Sri Lanka. That was 2019, so things obviously did not work out. But they had told other acquaintances about what a wonderful life they had, with a huge house, some large number of servants, and all kinds of extravagances.

I sure hope they are ok, but i have always been leery of opulence and displays simply because things do change. Everyone wants to live large, but that usually creates resentment and envy, and people will not forget that when things get bad.

The correct way to live is to be fair and generous with people, and to give things away if and while you can. These material things will certainly not last, but the feelings of gratitude and kindness and happiness and loyalty do last. Often they last a lifetime and beyond.

Countries with healthy communities, distributed wealth,... they can make it through tough times and hold it together. Wealth disparity weakens societies and leaves them vulnerable during bad times. I don't think Sri Lanka is going to do very well at getting through this rough patch.

yeah. That last post might not have been clear. These acquaintances were officials from Sri Lanka. There are countries where having a lot of money puts a person in a precarious social position. Using money extravagantly does not help matters, especially in times like these.
