mysterious monument

Is it, though? I thought it was some creepy post-apocalyptic guidebook, and John Oliver's team tracked down the guy that commissioned it. Or is it "mysterious" because no one wants to put any effort into researching it?

Yes. Oh yes. Oh very yes.  I have no idea. I just liked the way you described it. Both ways.  I'll be there tomorrow on the red eye.

The guide stones are kind of BS, in that they are the opinions of just one guy who watched too much sci-fi, and there is no way a society that is recovering from a nuclear war could implement any of his ideas to restrict population growth anyways, but it is not like he was promoting slavery or the oppression of minorities.

As far as things that could've been blown up go, yeah, this could've been a lot worse. The problem is, the GQP declared this a target, and it was blown up in their name. Since they no longer have it as a rallying cry, they're going to pick a new thing to be ordered destroyed... and at some point, it's going to stop being "project of a random sci-fi fan, mostly just a local tourist attraction" and start being "targets of real significance to hated groups", or "buildings with people in them". This shiat has to be nipped in the bud before it escalates, as whoever did this is almost certainly already constructing their next bomb.

The first part of the GG message reads
"Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity."

I saw actual humans on Facebook earlier today, claiming that the monument is asking for a global purge of over 7 billion people to reach that 500m number.

Apparently (according to the piece John Oliver), the best guess for authorship is a guy who supported David Duke, who had some opinions on the oppression of minorities.

You'd think more people in Alabama would be supportive. When it says 'Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature' he was talking about a very specific 500M people.

Well the fact that they demolished the rest of the guidestones after the fact just means yeah the bomber was successful....in fact that the government did the rest of the work for them...so it's going to continue.

Most times the world jumps on one of these things and attributes it to right-wingers, it turns out to be either a left-winger or a non-affiliated nut who did it. For once it would be nice if we waited for the cops to locate the real perp and then find out how s/he aligns politically.

To be fair, John Oliver did report on them less than a month ago, bringing attention to them among his national audience which isn't particularly conservative. So maybe that inspired their destruction, in which case who knows what the bomber's political leanings were. I'd never even heard of the thing myself.

So, in that article, it has this:

Update: The true identity of "Robert Christian" has since been found to be Herbert Hinzie Kersten (1920-2005), an Iowa doctor and white supremacist. For details, see this update. -BD

Which points to this:

Listener Jody wrote in with an update I hadn't heard:
Via Last Week Tonight at 13:50 mark. Oliver says that the "Robert Christian" of the Georgia guide stones is really Dr. Herbert Kersten: https://youtu.be/AEa3sK1iZxc?t=831
What John Oliver was reporting was that in 2015, a documentary came out: Dark Clouds Over Elberton: The True Story of the Georgia Guidestones, made by a small group of evangelical Christians intent on revealing what they believed would be some occult truth behind the Guidestones.[Blah blah blah]

So, Oliver's team dug up information Skeptoid hadn't, as acknowledged BY Skeptoid.

Yeah, these things are regularly mentioned by Alex Jones and the like. Like, "the Satanist Je-... Globalists put them up to brag about how they are gonna take your guns and kill your family. The best way to stop them is to buy out new Patriot Vigor Nutritional Suppliments."

Amazing how many "non-affiliated nuts" have white supremacist shiat all over their social
media accounts. But I'm sure that has nothing to do with Republican dog whistles since the late 1960's and outright fascist propaganda since 2016.
