Been trying to catch up.  Currently on episode 8 I believe, the fantasy episode.  So far good but I was watching that one and was like wth?

I've been watching the series with the family, and enjoying it. The characters are great, and the episodes have been good if borderline cheesy a couple of times. Still not sure whether to cheer or boo the body swap episode. It was a sitcom plot starring Vulcans.

My only complaint is the ship design. The crew cabins are ridiculously big and I hate the engineering section design. The bridge and sick bay are a good design, but suffer the prequel flaw of being more advanced than what is supposed to come after.

Oh, and Pike's hair. I swear the poof gets bigger each episode.

Pike's hair becomes sentient and takes over the ship? it has been evolving from episode to episode.
Anyway, this is the best Star Trek show since Deep Space 9. Going back to basics is working unlike Patrick Stewart's vanity project and Adventures of Whispering Crying Retcon.

Ok I just finished episode 8. I take back my wth reaction to the crew.  Got dusty at the end.  So hoping they would have found a cure.

Everything is going to just naturally look better than it did even in TNG, I wouldn't want them to "dumb down" the visuals just to appear consistent. As long as the actual technology isn't more advanced than it should be (no holodeck episodes, yay). Yeah, I had given up on any good ST after DS9 (although I didn't hate Enterprise as much as a lot of people did) so this is a pleasant surprise. Still, 10 episode seasons?

retrobruce: and latest episode of The Orville was also awesome.

It was, the whole season (which is probably also going to be short) was great. I'm glad Seth is making the show that he always wanted to but I do sort of miss the comedy a little. Although I see they still haven't gotten out of the 20th century (not even 21st, 20th) as far as pop culture references go. Even their high school and airplane imaginary worlds were in our time (earlier actually, none of the students were texting).

I enjoy actors having fun with absurd premises. But yeah. Agreed on the dust.

Wow... just absolute wow. Outstanding. Easily the best season of Trek since DS9's 4th, 5th, or 6th. I think it is a pretty good sign that people are complaining that there are only 10 episodes in this season. People seem to want more, and that's awesome. I get why there are only 10. I'd rather have 10 stellar episodes than 26 of varying degrees of quality. Besides; shows like this are expensive to produce.

SPOILERS --- Ye have been warned.

I only have a couple quibbles with the episode. Overall this was a *very* strong season finale, and sets up something for season 2.

1) I was hoping that James Frain would have shown up as the Romulan commander and they play it absolutely straight. Not a quibble, just I would have loved it for the LULZ and seeing fake Trekkie's heads explode with anger.
2) I did not like Ortegas being the racist/speciest one. It was unsettling.
3) The 14,000,605 futures thing with Spock ending up in Pike's position seemed a little weak.
4) How did Pike know the ship was called a "Bird of Prey" if they hadn't seen Romulans in 100 years? Maybe I missed something.
5) Almost every good Trek episode has a comet ('Masks' notwithstanding).
6) The fan service was there, but not quite Lower Decks memberberries. They struck a good balance. (see what I did there?! eh?!)
7) Too little La'an and Chapel, but understandably so. Also good gods Christina Chong looks amazing with her hair down like that. "You hug now?"
8) The re-imagining of the ST 2-6 red uniform for Pike was great.
9) Scotty! Kind of!
10) The visuals, writing and performances continued to be on-point.
11) The Romulans were very "Balance of Terror" (fittingly) and not how they were in TNG/Berman era. Nicely done.
12) Modern Trek in general is not shying away from making callbacks and references to the bad Trek (Archer/Enterprise, Sybok/ST5, Remans/ST:Nemesis, Kelvin/George Kirk/ST[2009]). I do like that. Not all Trek has been good but those are considered "canon" or whatever.

If Disco S5 (in production, so maybe?) and Picard S3 (likely not as this one has already wrapped) can go along this vein, then that would be wonderful.

It got better? I might have to give it another try. I tapped out of that episode a few minutes in.

The season had been hit or miss with me. Some episodes were pretty good, others got way too dumb for me to enjoy. For instance, the episode with the new reboot of the Gorn I totally hated but the episode with the space pirates I really liked.

Overall I'm liking it a little bit. I'd give it a C-.

Captain Bae tell?

Sorry.

I loved playing this scenario in star fleet battles.  good lord that plasma torpedo would wreck any ship.  Putting them on anything larger than that sub-light bird of prey and can have additional power and shields is just cheating.

I just watched it, and then went back and rewatched "Balance of Terror."  Omg, the new connecting with the ancient, I love it.

I am super high right now. Time and space. It is beautiful.

The last episode was one of the best time travel stories ever on TV, at least as good as "Joan Collins must die!". That's not a spoiler, it's not like that.

Just finished finale. I guess pre Kirk the Federation was less tolerant of the bio engineering of humanoids.  Hopefully, Chris will get it sorted out in season 2.

The Federation never really chilled out that much on bio engineering.  Bashir had that whole episode where he could have potentially had his whole family thrown in prison for life once his secret got out.

That was probably the strongest season of Trek since DS9 at its peak.  I really hope the reception to it gets the studio to make adjustments to the franchise overall going forward.  It's probably way too late for season 3 of Picard, but maybe they can make the next season of Discovery tolerable.

2) I did not like Ortegas being the racist/speciest one. It was unsettling.

Well, since this was a straight-up rewrite of BoT, they needed someone to play the Lt. Stiles role. Presumably, there was a Captain Ortegas and others from her family who died in the first Romulan War.

So, I'm assuming that Season 2 will be about Pike being so busy trying to rescue Una that he completely forgot to tell Starfleet that "Hey, the Romulans look just like Vulcans, and have invisible ships that can blow up an entire solid-iron asteroid!". Because Kirk sure could have used that info in BoT.

Yep, honestly having the bad guys look like vulcans should make people pause for a second and wonder about romulans being spies in the federation itself.  I mean she didn't jump up and phaser him but if the engineer were still on the ship (alive) and the romulans looked like him they'd do the same thing.

I've been waiting all season for SNW to disappoint me, but every week I like it more. Until now, TOS is the only ST I've really liked. The writers of SNW obviously understand what made the original so good. I never thought I'd enjoy a ST show this much again.

Like others I have my nitpicks, but overall I couldn't be happier.

Did we ... did we just get a whole season of Good Star Trek???? What is happening???

Did they lock Goldsman and Kurtzman in a basement somewhere?

Whatever they did, here's hoping they keep doing it, because it's farking nice to have a good Trek show again.

Andric: Did we ... did we just get a whole season of Good Star Trek???? What is happening???

No, we just acknowledged that the same Pike, Number One and Spock that people were saying were awesome in Season 2 of Discovery continued to be awesome after they got their own show.

Only one bad episode. The fairy tale one. And that one had its heart in the right place, just didn't nail the execution. Otherwise, some episodes were better than others, but they were all at least decent.

Nice that whoever's making this one at least seems like they've maybe seen some Star Trek ever. Unlike the other current live action Treks.

The finale was almost perfect. Terrible casting for a certain prominent character is its only major flaw, but the rest is so good that it easily overcomes that.

2022-07-08 1:42:01 PM
Wow. S1 of SNW is fantastic. Every episode was supremely enjoyable.  The last two were riveting. Cast is great as well. Not a single miscast person. Anson Mount is on par with Stewart and Shatner.  And Peck is a great Spock. Jess Bush makes me tingle in my no-no zone every time she shows up.

Paramount Plus needs to order up 100 episodes of this show and NOT fork it up.
