Trump learned it from Richard M. Nixon, who also used the IRS as his own personal C.R.E.E.P. annex.

Taxes and Crime are intimately associated in the Republican state of mind.

I remember during the 90s how Rush and Newt were always saying the Clintons used the IRS as their personal goon squad.  I don't remember them ever bringing the receipts.

Even back then, every accusation was a confession.

Of course every accusation was a confession.

And yet, despite the IRS audits and Trump's vindictive desire to charge them with any offense, they have been charged with nothing and there are, as far as we know, no pending investigations.

I can't keep track of how many State and Federal investigations there are into the grifter-in-chief.

Do we know if Trump has an enemies list?

I'm picturing Big Bird and Mister Rogers at the top for reasons beyond comprehending.

Something TFG obviously doesn't understand is that an audit is really only a problem if you have a complicated return. Even then, any CPA who is half decent should be able to produce the work papers and documents to support it. It says something about him that he just assumes everyone else is committing tax fraud. James Comey was a public employee, meaning his salary probably topped out at around $200,000. There aren't a lot of opportunities to commit tax fraud when most of your income is W-2 income. Other than producing billable hours for Comey's accountant, this petty gesture probably didn't do much.

Wasn't Trump under audit for like 7 years running when he was elected? Did those just go away when he became President?

Actually Comey worked in the private sector for several years prior to his post with the FBI.   He has a net worth of about 14 million dollars.

Can't read the article without registering, but just saw this on MSNBC.

This audit is intensive.  Someone called it "an autopsy without the benefit of death".  Comey even had to send in a Christmas card that showed he actually had the kids he claimed as dependents.

The odds of being "randomly" selected for this audit are 1 in a little over 30,000.  The odds of both Comey and McCabe being selected... you're talking some pretty big numbers now

And of course, nothing will happen

Three Crooked Squirrels: Wasn't Trump under audit for like 7 years running when he was elected? Did those just go away when he became President?

He was still claiming to be under audit during his presidency, because a Senate committee wanted copies.  It's the audit that never ends

unfortunately, our assumptions don't hold up in court. You'd need evidence showing this was a deliberate retaliation by Trump/Trump's IRS toadie.

Most of my clients are in that net worth range and it could mean pretty much anything in terms of the complexity of his personal return. I've seen clients in that range with 15+ K-1's and a phone book of brokerage statements, and I've seen some that stash their wealth in retirement accounts and have practically no taxable income from it. If his accountant is any good though, the audit is more of an inconvenience than anything else... except to the CPA who gets to bill $250 an hour for it.

Why it is none of the Trump Cabinet or any of Trump's appointees have not been indicted yet is just beyond me. These people crimed in broad farking daylight.

FFS, Scott Pruitt was using a lobbyist's condo as a crash pad for $50 a month.

I support this

I think it will be best way to get rid of crazy right wing Federalist society judges, and people like 'Constitutional Sheriffs'

And yes, it is profiling: profiling people who have demonstrated that they believe they are above the law; that they should be the ones who determine the law. So they are very likely to have decided that tax laws don't apply to them either.

Jail them

If I explain why it makes me an Eeyore.

And this particular Trump appointee is apparently still in his appointed position.

Wiki: "Trump's $72.9 million tax refund covering multiple years of paid taxes is currently under audit by the IRS. The audit began in 2011 and has not been resolved as of 2020."

-2021 Trump audit was still not complete as he was forced to hand over tax documents to Congress
-2022 Trump's audit is still ongoing

Two people who miraculously used their positions to generally harass a President solely for political reasons solely so they could make bank writing books about it. Then, when they come into money (from book deals) that is generally above their historical pay grades, the IRS computer algorithms flag them for audits.

But NOPE, they think that's 100% Trump doing it!

Andy McCabe was fired from his job for lack of candor. Only because the Biden Administration intervened was he rehired so he could collect early retirement.

Andy McCabe is out there saying the audit was "nerve-wracking" while at the same time being a very senior member of the law enforcement bozos who generally parrot the line "If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide."

So, how is that audit "nerve-wracking" if everything is legit and above reproach?

You are correct, it was (according to the right) Obama that was allegedly using the IRS to harass conservative non-profits which turned out to be complete bullshiat, but thanks for the clarification.

It can be a bit invasive, especially if you have any business activities. But if you keep good records and avoid overly aggressive tax strategies, you generally come out of it alright.
There's a saying among accountants; "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered". Most auditors understand that you're trying to avoid a large tax bill. There are plenty of legal ways to accomplish this. I've seen them be forgiving of less than perfect record keeping, and accepting when something was bending the rules just a little bit, but there is zero tolerance for people who deliberately break the rules.

That's an indicator as to how batshiat crazy this timeline is, Comey is always referred to as a TFG 'foe', and yet he delivered 2016 to him on a platter.  A platter the remainder of which was filled with cold McDonald's hamburgers.
