I'm not sure "Fark is wasting my time" is a complaint that'll get a lot of traction here.

^ Americans when they're confronted with the cold horror that other countries exist and they have politics, too.

Imagine how most of us feel about the 140th thread about "World War 3" even though it's literally just a conflict between two countries, or all the breathless "ooooh gurl, Trump just broke another law and someone said something about possibly maybe writing him a stern letter someday" headlines every day.

Whether he can appoint replacements or not doesn't really matter since this signals that he won't survive the surely upcoming no confidence vote.

buravirgil: So you might know: Is there a precedent anywhere close to 43? I mean, given a bicameral history since the 14th century, has Boris broken a record other than the one his hair has?

I'm more interested in politics as live events. I can't answer to the history. Rough study of the UK constitution about 25 years ago said there were around 100-120 "payroll" Members of Parliament -- that is, folk appointed by the Prime Minister to positions in the Government. I think no Prime Minister has lost so many payroll positions so quickly.

That said, I've always thought of Johnson's hair as an asylum seeker.

He could just replace them. But that assumes there are more people willing to bet on him. It is also likely that this sort of mass resignation will lead to even more of the party turning on him. generally the PM would resign to let the party coalesce around a new leader.

The other thing is, a simple majority of MPs can pass a vote of no confidence and bring down his entire government.

They can just appointment someone new from elected party members but he's quickly running out.

The PM does it though formally they are appointed by the Queen on the advice of the PM.

Theoretically the Queen is still the entire government. There is no separation of powers. She appoints people to positions and delegates parts of running the country to them.

Over about 800-900 years, money has always been the main contention between the people and the king. Kings haven't been able to raise taxes without summoning a (historically temporary) parliament and getting them to vote on it. Eventually, parliaments used this leverage to get enough de facto power that they cut off one king's head, installed another, overthrew one more, and installed their own foreign king who's descendants still rule.

So now kings appoint whoever the hell Parliament tells them to. The most important position (because once again: money) is First Lord of the Treasury, which is by popular convention called the Prime Minister even though no such title actually exists. The majority party in the House of Commons nominates their own leader for this position and the Queen then formally appoints them.

But all of the cabinet ministers technically report to the Queen, not to the Prime Minister. She appoints new ones, and when they quit, they tender their resignation to her. But in practice, she'll do whatever the Prime Minister says to do with them. And there's no real need to actually write this relationship down legally, because everyone remembers the last couple times a king stepped out of line, they ended up dead.

*For the British monarchy. Fortescue is a historically significant figure in the fact that the British monarchy is still around, more or less. He advocated for Limited Monarchy, as opposed to the path taken by, eg., the French.
