I think the only thing surprising about this story is it took so long to get out.

I remember listening to those tracks. Yeah, they did sound like a Michael Jackson impersonator, but at that point in his career, wasn't even Michael Jackson sort of a Michael Jackson impersonator?

Sony Music and Jackson's estate said their removal from streaming sites had nothing to do with their authenticity.
In a statement, they described the action as "the simplest and best way to move beyond the conversation associated with these tracks once and for all".

The simplest and best way to move beyond the conversation would be to bust out the demos.

Apparently they downloaded them from Limewire and they were already mis-titled but no one noticed.

Was one of them Happy Birthday Lisa?

Just when I thought I'd fully repressed those memories, you had to post this. And before my bed time, no less!

Now my dreams will be filled with all my mp3s being mislabeled as Kraftwerk and Offspring. I hate you with the fury of a dozen George Forman grills. I hope you're happy.

its a nifty little scam... apparently the producers sold those tracks to the Jackson estate for a few million.   The scrub they brought to imitate Mike probably got a day rate of a 1000 bucks.

knbwhite: Was one of them Happy Birthday Lisa?

From what I understand, yes. While Jackson did portray the mentally-ill character, the character's singing voice was provided by a sound-alike for lawyer-y reasons.

From what I remember, he even recorded the song with the full intent of it appearing on The Simpsons until his record label's attorneys finally got the Fox Network on their antennas.

That detail I did not know. I wonder if that tape still exists. Not a fan at all, but it would be a nice bit of trivia like pointing out that you can still hear Buddy Epson in the song "We're Off to See the Wizard," despite the recasting.
