I watched the launch, but hadn't heard they'd lost comms.

The loss of comms was well after the launch. The Rocket Lab Photon kick stage took about a week sending it on its way. The loss of signal was after separation from the Photon had done its job and separated.

It needed to reorient after the boost and couldn't until Windows 11 finished uploading.

Might have spun a bit after separation, might have had a power interruption, but it sounds like it went into safe mode and lost directional control, so the antenna was pointing the wrong way. Most sats are programmed to go into a "scan and lock" mode where they'll slowly move the antenna pointing around the sky looking for a signal to lock onto in order to regain comms when they're in safe mode.
